Nute Gunray was a Neimoidian male business executive who served as the Viceroy of the Trade Federation during the final decades of the Galactic Republic up until his assassination at the end of the Clone Wars , a pan- galactic war between the Republic and its splinter state, the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Alongside his allies, Gunray rose to prominence after the ill-fated Eriadu Conference left a power vacuum in the leadership of the Trade Federation. Cutthroat and cowardly, Gunray continued to collaborate with Sidious, such as during the Invasion of Naboo the following year , unaware that he was merely a pawn in the Sith's Grand Plan. In a plot by Sidious to get his alter ego, Senator Sheev Palpatine of Naboo , elected to the position of Supreme Chancellor of the Republic, he and Gunray manufactured a scenario where the Trade Federation would blockade Naboo with their fleet after the passage of legislation detrimental to the Federation's profits. With Jedi help, the queen escaped the blockade, and Gunray took control of the planet. Gunray was promptly arrested and taken to Coruscant , but he was able to retain his position as Viceroy after four Supreme Court trials. Bitter at the Republic, Gunray allied himself and the company with Count Dooku , a former Jedi Master , and he pledged Federation military support to the Confederacy of Independent Systems. In return for his investment, Dooku helped Gunray orchestrate a failed attempt on Amidala's life, who had since become a Republic senator.
