We had started with Duplos and moved up the ranks, till we got to Lego Mindstorm robot kits. Then along came a new program, that officially launched on June 1st, called the Lego Master Builder Academy. Although they are a rare breed, there is such a thing as a Lego Master Builder. These lucky grownups go to work every day and create amazing designs for the Lego company. What better way to learn than a structured tutorial building experience, focusing on fundamental skills with increasing complexity? Initially, they were offered as a subscription service. You would receive a box with the first kit of each level. The box included a plastic sorting tray and the designer handbook. The second and third kits would each arrive in a polybag along with the designer handbook. The was enough room in the box to add the second and third handbooks in that level, but not really room for the additional LEGO pieces. This limited release was the main reason I wanted to document the techniques covered in the series. Each set included an elaborate page Designer Handbook. These were very high-quality with a binding much like the LEGO Architecture series instruction books. There were several pages of introduction materials talking about the techniques and styles of that kit. Each kit included instructions for three models or more , much like the Creator 3-in-1 series.

The project could see that the product was not scalable to other markets as it would have been overly complicated to provide each market with its own version. Looks like my only hope of ever acquiring these is BrickLink. Was it an issue of distribution, marketing, language localisation, or a mix of all three? Not even I truly knew what it was until the Lego Stores started to "promote" them. From the box, they look like a, non-coherent, extremely overpriced set. I saw plenty of people go "Ooh what's this? Master Builder Academy was sold in a series of kits which each include a building instruction handbook full of tips on the building techniques featured in the kit, and the bricks needed to build the models within it. With every new "level" of the series, a new minifigure is included with the first kit of that level. In every kit new accessories for the minifigure are included, which outfit the minifigure to the theme of the kit. Also, in each kit, new techniques or skills are featured for making LEGO models more stable and stylish.
