The Volkswagen Type 2 is a forward control light commercial vehicle introduced in by the German automaker Volkswagen as its second car model. As one of the forerunners of the modern cargo and passenger vans, the Type 2 gave rise to forward control competitors in the United States in the s, including the Ford Econoline , the Dodge A , and the Chevrolet Corvair 95 Corvan , the latter adapting the rear-engine configuration of the Corvair car in the same manner in which the VW Type 2 adapted the Type 1 layout. Brazil contained the last factory in the world that produced the T2 series of Type 2, which ceased production on 31 December , due to the introduction of more stringent safety regulations in the country. Pon visited Wolfsburg in , intending to purchase Type 1s for import to the Netherlands, where he saw a Plattenwagen , an improvised parts-mover based on the Type 1 chassis, and realized something better was possible using the stock Type 1 pan. When capacity freed up, a prototype known internally as the Type 29 was produced in a short three months. An ambulance model was added in December which repositioned the fuel tank in front of the transaxle, put the spare tire behind the front seat, [9] and added a " tailgate "-style rear door. Unlike other rear engine Volkswagens, which evolved constantly over time but never saw the introduction of all-new models, the Transporter not only evolved, but was completely revised periodically with variations retrospectively referred to as versions "T1" to "T5" a nomenclature only invented after the introduction of the front-drive T4 which replaced the T3. However, only generations T1 to T3 can be seen as directly related to the Beetle see below for details [ citation needed ]. In the United States, the Corvair -based Chevrolet Corvan cargo van and Greenbrier passenger van adopted the use of the rear-engine layout of the Corvair car in the same manner that the Type 2 had used the rear-engine layout of the Type 1, using the Corvair's horizontally opposed, 6 cylinder air-cooled engine for power.

I felt like a child, giddy with excitement as though waking up on my birthday. The delivery driver — who seemed just as excited as I was — showed me around, pointing out the quirks of this old vehicle. This included how the windshield opens, how the air vents in from the roof, and how one must manually remove the wipers from their resting position before turning them on, lest they break. Mostly, we just fawned over this piece of history, despite its faults. And there were some issues with this otherwise gorgeous relic. The linkage for reverse is difficult to find, but I learned how to massage the shifter into the correct position. There was the odd paint bubble or crack. Many of the moving parts squeaked, especially the steering wheel and gear shifter. Trying to remain cool, I had the windows open while I drove. For a while, I even had the windshield panes tilted up and open until I took a large insect to the face.

Then again, minivan is just another name, one of dozens of appellations that Volkswagen itself and the many fans of the Transporter around the world have used to refer to it. Which of those are actual model names and which are just nicknames? Which refer to specific models or generations? How do you know which is the correct term to use? Let's break it down. To begin with, Volkswagen from the start referred to its rear-engine, air-cooled, Ben Pon-suggested van models internally as the Type 2—with the Beetle preceding it as the Type 1—but advertised the Type 2 to the public as the Transporter or VW-Transporter, a model name that continues to have a spot in Volkswagen's lineup today.
