Hunter , formerly known as the Golden Guard , is a major character in The Owl House , initially depicted as an antagonist. He was the right-hand man of Emperor Belos and the former head of the Emperor's Coven. Hunter was presumed to be the nephew of Belos and as such, he was dedicated to his cause of ending all wild magic in the realm, but in reality, he is the latest version of the Golden Guard clones created by Belos to serve him faithfully in his mad quest. After becoming the head of the Emperor's Coven , the Golden Guard acts as the main enforcer for Emperor Belos and antagonist to the residents of the Owl House. However, a chance encounter with Luz Noceda and the meeting of a mysterious palisman named Flapjack , who chooses Hunter as his partner, gives Hunter a new perspective to life outside the Emperor's Coven. This soon culminates with Hunter learning the truth of his origins. Upon this discovery, and realizing he can never go back, Hunter abandons Belos and the Emperor's Coven altogether.

He becomes the Head of the Emperor's Coven after Lilith Clawthorne abdicates her role, and it's later revealed that he cannot perform magic, relying on staff to cast artificial spells. In Lake Eclipse , Eda says Luz calls him "a bad but sad boy". He has a red bird palisman called Flapjack. The fandom seems in general agreement that Hunter deserves better. Hunter is super cute and he deserves the world but he is about to have some serious long lasting effects from living with Belos his whole life [3]. The Owl House centers itself around several outcasts bonding. Over time, Hunter shows not only his passion for magic but also fully comes to terms with how the Emperor has abused him. Hunter carries a lot of weight in just his existence. Belos spent every conversation with Hunter emotionally manipulating him - isolating him from witches his age, forcing him to practice physically grating training, and making him compete with everyone he meets for any affection. Not to mention he watches Belos murder palisman to survive daily and also the physical abuse. However, Hunter is not a witch nor a human - he is a grimwalker. Mind you, Belos killed Caleb for falling in love with a witch. He is a representation of generational trauma all centering around a vile leader.

When he tries to question Inner Belos about it, the emperor decides to kill him before he can betray him like all the other Golden Guards did. It's later revealed that what he's afraid of isn't everyone learning he's a Grimwalker, but that they'll hate him if they learn who he's meant to be a copy of, believing the person he was cloned from was an evil witch hunter like Belos. However, he killed each and every one of them for betraying him and when Hunter learns the Awful Truth , the emperor decides it's better to kill the boy before he gets the chance to turn on him too. He later helps free Amity and her siblings after their mother grounds them. At first, Hunter saw Gus as a potential recruit for the Emperor's Coven. At this point, Hunter admits she could very well escape with the item, but if she does, he can still come after her and Luz later with the rest of his coven. She then hugs Hunter and tries to get him fight Belos back. Outside the mask, people seem to think of him as just another kid. He then teleports them out of the way when Luz's newly hatched palisman unleashes an energy blast. When Luz first sees Hunter maskless in "Hunting Palismen", she slaps him awake, he licks her hand when she covers his mouth, she smears his spit back onto his face, and the two of them get into a slap-fight. Extreme Doormat : Darius accuses him of being one in "Any Sport In A Storm", claiming he is unable to think for himself and only does what he is told. All for Nothing : He spends "Any Sport in a Storm" trying to prove to Darius that he deserves to wear the sigil of the Golden Guard and by the end is able to earn it back. While they're being attacked by Kikimora, Hunter teleports himself into Willow to push her out of the way of the Abomitron. While staying in the Human Realm, Hunter had his hair and forelock trimmed by Willow, giving him short bangs.

Following the Day of Unity , Hunter and his friends were stranded in the Human Realm and spent the months working away to return to the Demon Realm. Despite not interacting following his immediate return to the Demon Realm, in " For the Future ", Hunter's opinion of Eda was shown to have greatly improved, coming to consider her an ally and showing concern for her wellbeing. After his panic attack from finding out the truth, he spent the next few episodes as a fugitive which left him physically and mentally exhausted. When the bird came to him later, Hunter told the palisman who he previously called "bird" to leave before Belos could see him, knowing the fate that befell any palisman his uncle got his hands on, but was surprised when Flapjack instead picked him to be his bounded witch by turning into a staff in front of him. Hunter, like the many Golden Guards before him, was created with the likeness of Belos' late older brother, Caleb Wittebane , and Inner Belos states he is the closest to his likeness of any grimwalker Belos created. He finds the dog-like King "weirdly endearing", forms a very close bond with his bird Palisman Flapjack, and while staying in the Human Realm, develops a fascination with wolves. A week amongst teenagers his age taught Hunter more about how to be a normal social individual than years growing up under Belos' control.
