Jones has been found to have defamed the parents of a Sandy Hook student for calling the attack a hoax. Heslin and Scarlett Lewis are the parents of 6-year-old Jesse Lewis. Their son was a first grader who was among the 20 students and six teachers killed at the school in Newtown, Connecticut, on Dec. They said Jones and the media empire he controls and used to spread his false assertions must be held accountable. The parents testified Tuesday about a decade of trauma, inflicted first by the murder of their son and what followed: gun shots fired at a home, online and telephone threats, and harassment on the street by strangers, all fueled by Jones and his conspiracy theory spread to his followers via his website Infowars. At one point in her testimony, Lewis looked directly at Jones, who was sitting barely 10 feet away. Courts in Texas and Connecticut have already found Jones liable for defamation for his portrayal of the Sandy Hook massacre as a hoax involving actors aimed at increasing gun control. Jones was ordered to pay the damages to the families of the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting following a series of defamation trials earlier this year. They also estimate that the year-old has between 50 and 99 creditors, including the individually named relatives of the victims and an FBI agent who responded to the attack. His show's parent company - Free Speech Systems - filed for bankruptcy in July. The latest filing temporarily halts all proceedings in the Connecticut case, including a scheduled hearing examining how the families would receive the money and what assets could be included. It could further delay payments as the case plays out in bankruptcy courts. It is unclear how much money the families will receive. Following the filing, a lawyer representing the families said "the bankruptcy system does not protect anyone who engages in intentional and egregious attacks on others".
One month after the Sandy Hook school shootings, the list of victims continues to grow. One man, Gene Rosen — who found six children and a bus driver in his driveway, brought them into his home, fed them and called parents to assure them that their children were safe — has been harassed by telephone, email and online by those who think he is lying about his actions, and is part of a conspiracy. Rosen is not the first hero to be assaulted and insulted by conspiracy theorists with doubts. In , when conspiracy theorist Bart Sibrel confronted astronaut Buzz Aldrin and called him a "coward and a liar" for faking the moon landings , the year-old promptly punched Sibrel in the face. A group called the Sandy Hook Truther movement has emerged from the dust and chaos over the past weeks to claim that the school shooting was all a staged event. Though many Americans are outraged and incredulous that anyone could doubt that the tragedy even happened, the Sandy Hook school shootings follow classic conspiracy thinking. Here are a few reasons why. Shootings — even child murders — happen every day, several times a day, in America. According to UNICEF, America has the worst record of child abuse and homicide in the industrialized world, with an average of 27 children killed every week by their parents and caregivers. But those child murders don't have implications for enacting a national policy on gun control.
