As seen in "Diaz Family Vacation", the occupants residing in Mewni and their place of residence appears to depend on their status in the hierarchy: peasants occupy the lowest land bottom level , having dirty streets and widespread poverty; then presumably middle-ranking residents occupy the middle section second level , which is less atrocious than the previous section; and the nobles occupy the highest part of the land where the castle is prominent top level. Beyond the Butterfly family's kingdom is a swampland, where Mewni's indigenous monster population were forced to flee after the first settlers forced them off of their land. Mewni's main crop is corn. According to Star and Marco's Guide to Mastering Every Dimension, the royal lineage of the Butterfly family is "matrilineal", meaning the queen holds more authority than the king, and the throne is handed down from the queen to her firstborn daughter. The castle is significantly larger than other buildings in Mewni, possessing numerous towers of varying sizes that appear to be built into a mountain. Several railways and tunnels connect the towers to one another. However, I believe it is call this because everyone in her past lineage has just simply called it the Grandma Room. Star likely avoided the room because of the mysterious and supernatural like essence it holds. Note that she fears for her life even shrieking of death when the placard moves below her. If you look at each tapestry they all have their own hints into the life of the Butterfly lineage.

The Butterfly family is a Mewman family of royals that rule over Mewni. While it is unknown when this began, a family tradition was established which stated that when the newest heir to the throne turned fourteen years old, they would get a magical wand that has the capacity to destroy the universe if it fell into the wrong hands. The family name and lineage appears to be matrilineal, passing from mother to daughter. While male Butterflys do exist, they are noticeably in fewer numbers. There are two separate bloodlines of the Butterfly Family: the original one extending from at least Soupina Butterfly to Meteora Butterfly , and the new one extending from Festivia Butterfly that includes Moon Butterfly , Star Butterfly , and multiple other members. These marks are the result of a longtime exposure to magic.
