He says the quiet, thoughtful woman never took drugs and was only being polite in her public interactions with the man convicted in her death. The disappearance of Natsumi in September and discovery 16 days later of her naked body — stuffed inside a suitcase outside the empty Gabriola House mansion in Vancouver — made national headlines. He also pleaded guilty to interfering with human remains. Natsumi, who was 30 at the time of her death, was by all accounts a studious, intelligent, cautious and friendly woman. Meisner says he met Natsumi outside his office when ushering her away from her eventual killer, who was a regular hang-about at his downtown property, where he would loiter and sometimes panhandle. I approached her to usher her away from Schneider, who was loitering on our property that day — again.

The man who killed a Japanese exchange student in Vancouver five years ago will stay behind bars following a Parole Board of Canada decision Thursday. The board ruled year-old William Schneider is assessed as high risk to reoffend violently and an above average risk to reoffend sexually. Schneider was found guilty in by a B. Supreme Court jury of the second-degree murder of year-old Natsumi Kogawa. Following the verdict, Justice Laura Gerow handed Schneider a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no parole eligibility for 14 years. He appealed and had a new trial ordered earlier this year. The board said, in the decision Thursday, that Schneider has demonstrated that he can be impulsive and unpredictable and can behave violently, even when unprovoked. Kogawa, who came to Canada in May on a student visa, was last heard from on Sept. An autopsy found traces of anti-anxiety medication in her system but the pathologist was unable to determine a cause of death. The prosecution pointed to a gesture that police say Schneider made when he was being interviewed in prison as evidence of the smothering. That interview was audiotaped but not videotaped. William Victor Schneider had successfully overturned his conviction in the B. Court of Appeal last year, arguing the B. Supreme Court justice who oversaw his trial made mistakes and accepted evidence of a conversation that should have been tossed out as hearsay. Crown prosecutors, however, were successful in an appeal of that decision, meaning Schneider can no longer challenge the verdict. He has already been sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 14 years for the crime. Three questions needed to be answered to come to this conclusion: Was what the brother overheard relevant? Was an exception to the hearsay rule applicable?
