Misato and kaji
I also liked the coupling of Misato and Kaji, who remain my two favorite characters from the series. The early episodes with Kaji largely portray him as smug and a womanizer.
In the eponymous anime television series , Misato is head of the operations department of the special agency Nerv, and is in charge of directing and devising war strategies needed to defeat mysterious beings named Angels. Due to childhood emotional traumas, she developed a frivolous, exuberant character and a disordered lifestyle. The character also appears in the franchise's animated feature films and related media, including video games , the original net animation Petit Eva: Evangelion School , the Rebuild of Evangelion films, and the manga adaptation by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. For the creation of the character, Neon Genesis Evangelion director Hideaki Anno took inspiration from his personality. Misato is also inspired by several real-life figures and other anime characters, including Usagi Tsukino from Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. Critics have drawn parallels between Misato's characterization and concepts of philosophers and psychologists such as Carl Gustav Jung , Arthur Schopenhauer , and Friedrich Nietzsche ; Misato's feelings for her father have been linked to Jung's Electra complex , her personal philosophy to Schopenhauer's hedgehog dilemma , and her psychology to the Dionysian spirit postulated by Nietzsche.

Even though the two are the complete opposites, strong feelings arise and Asuka doesn't quite know how to deal with them. Archived from the original on 24 July Evangelion: 2, misato and kaji.
Kaji is first presented in Episode 8. Misato is annoyed to see him as Asuka's guardian, as their last entanglement, years ago in college, ended less than amicably. Kaji however remains friendly and continuously teases her, and her new charge Shinji, about it. Kaji works as a "Special Investigator" at Nerv, arousing Misato's suspicions. He is also friends with Ritsuko, another friend of Misato she first met in college, and flirts with her, causing Misato to feel jealous. They slowly become closer again, as Kaji increasingly flirts with her and says he still loves her. Asuka, now under Misato's care, feels resentful of both of them, as she has a teenage crush on him.
He appears in Evangelion: 3. Kensuke Aida introduces Shinji to him during the former's stay in Village-3, and it is heavily implied that Kensuke takes the picture of Shinji and the younger Kaji that Shinji eventually shows to Misato on the Wunder. While Kaji Jr. Named after his father and born after his death, the younger Kaji was conceived at an undetermined point in time during or shortly after the events of Evangelion 2. Misato's pregnancy was an impetus for Kaji to provide the sacrifice necessary to put an end to Third Impact , in events that were briefly seen in flashback. Misato has a very distant relationship with her son, much like Gendo's own relationship with Shinji. Kensuke states that Misato keeps a distance from him in order to protect him from afar. This could be interpreted as Misato attempting attempt to shield him from threats to his life from Nerv, or due to the knowledge that her resistance to Nerv would leave him with little in the way of being able to care for him and therefore harm him. Nevertheless, she is glad to know that her son is well when Shinji brings her the news of his well-being, and asks Shinji to take care of her son. Although he is not seen onscreen in person afterwards, Misato wishes Kaji goodbye through his photograph when she sacrifices her life.
