Each stage relates to year-group expectations. We have called them stages in case you have children working at a level that differs from their own year group. This way a Y4 child working below expectations does not have to complete work with a Y2 label, for example. The stages are based on a measure of readability called an ATOS score. It is a formula designed to guide students and teachers to appropriate-level texts. It is based on a number of predictors - average sentence length, average word length and word difficulty level.

We have recently adopted whole class reading as the main way of teaching reading and have found the VIPERS approach by redgierob of Literacy Shed fame great for constructing questions, whilst ensuring all the reading domains are covered. The final inspiration for this topic came from MrBoothY6 during his workshop at the inspiring Reading Rocks conference in October last year. I used the VIPERS template to write comprehension questions for our whole class reading lessons and added pre-teach sessions. These ranged from researching precious stones to tasting Turkish Delight. These pre-reading sessions were greatly enjoyed by all of us and what was noticeable was that because the children were introduced to something e. Turkish Delight and then read about it afterwards not only did it help them to understand it better, but it has helped them to retain the information. The best example of this is probably the session where the children researched precious stones prior to reading the next section of the book which referred to different gems. This session was brilliantly led by my outstanding trainee missbYates. This is all rather unfashionable nowadays, with many preferring direct teaching but I strongly believe there is a place for some well-shaped discovery learning beyond EYFS. One child discovered that diamonds are metamorphic rocks, which caused great excitement, as we were learning about rocks in science at the time.
