Updated: Jul 11, Time for another dram! Being aged 16 years, lagavulin 16 review, this single-malt whisky is lagavulin 16 review of the smokiest you can find from the Islay region. The Lagavulin isn't my usual go-to whisky, and, as I said before, I'm not very fond of smokey peated whiskies, but I received this for my birthday so I had to give it a try.
In effect, it was more of a cautionary tale about scotch huberous than it was a review. This was a decade ago, and Lagavulin loomed collosal before my pubescent palate. But that was a decade ago, and now is now. Christine graced me with the lovely Christmas gift of a bottle of the big boy and I thought it was high time to do a proper tasting and see if the hype was worth it. It pours a rich caramel colour that looks positively syrupy in the glass.

Average score from 88 reviews and ratings The Lagavulin 16 is such a quintessential malt that everyone should have in their bar cabinet. I already tasted several batches. Today there is one from in the glass, thanks to my good friend Pat who gave me another sample. Powerful and distinct nose on maritime elements that transport me straight to the south coast of Islay. Rocks in the surf, foam heads on the waves, kelp. This is perfectly accompanied by caramel, charred wood, vanilla and orange marmalade. And of course, that typical smokiness that characterizes Lagavulin so much. Tar and car tires. It caresses the taste buds with sweet notes of caramel, blood orange and even something of cocoa, while the salty notes translate to salmiak, tar and olives. The peat smoke is not dominant, but it is unmistakable and gives this malt warmth and weight. The finish is medium-long, sweet versus salty and slightly drying towards the end. This remains a winner, batch after batch. Okay, so I know around here overpeated, extra-smoky whiskies are more than appreciated, and I'm not going to say I dislike them or anything like that, but in my book and only mine drams shouldn't lean excessively towards any given direction, be it peat or sweet or mellow or booze or whatever. TL;DR A pleasant peat bomb to pop your cherry, ten years ago. Words of a portrayal which may have sparked a whole new generation of single malt scotch whisky fanatics. Whether you watched Parks and Recreation or not, the character of Ron Swanson played by Nick Offerman has at some level become a whisky icon. A lone-wolf stoic libertarian who can sand down a canoe and likes nothing more than a plate of eggs and a bloody steak with a tumbler of Lagavulin, the masculinity is practically pulsating… well maybe if you were 17 in the year Smoky, savoury, sweet, salty, sumptuous peat. The sachet of whisky MSG that can turn clear liquid into something more potent than a fish head curry laksa. Rather than trying to bring people in with the subtleties of vanilla and honey from classic Glenfiddich, peat can sometimes hide the alcoholic bite that can act as a precluding barrier for new drinkers.
Where can I start? Still, after over whiskies tasted, my absolute favorite dram. I could go on and on about the grandeur of Lagavulin 16 year old. It is the reason, why I started my whisky tasting hobby. Whisky has been one of my favorite drinks ever since I got my first taste of it. But after Lagavulin 16YO, I started a quest for finding something that can top it. Whisky the cheap ones was just a great and rough way to get drunk. Lagavulin showed me the grand side of whisky. It made me appreciate whisky the way it should be appreciated.

There are many reasons for this, which were all covered in the previous review, which means all that remains to be done is to tell you all about Lagavulin Lagavulin 16 is a whisky that has had an interesting history and is considered a classic single malt whisky that is a must-try for anyone remotely serious about trying whisky. It is also although Laphroaig might dispute this considered the most popular smoky whisky available and frequently outperforms other Islay whiskies in sales.

I bought this bottle with high expectations, after reading lots of consensual positive comments about its strong, smoky and powerful flavours. The taste is quite dry and a bit salty, but it's the nose that has the huge smoke kick in it. Partner and creative director, Kumiko. I enjoyed it in the beginning but at the end the smoke was a little too much for me. Of course, back then good scotch whisky was hard to come by in Oregon. Peat, smoke, sherry, spearmint, rooibos tea, cigar, eucalyptus, throat lozenges, tangerine, smoked meat, dark chocolate, and mellow roast coffee. Aftertaste is, nonetheless, obliterated by peat and smoke and -surprisingly, not that long-lasting. But, this Lagavulin was the whisky that folks ranted and raved about. It's also nice to return to a whisky and find it better than last time - not something I've had much luck with this last year. Palate: Insanely complex, like a word problem with too many variables that you have to read over again. This is a fair assessment, and your notes are pretty similar to mine.

Hi WT, i just went along with the line up of the Diageo tasting. Water and maybe 20 minutes or so would calm it down but it still wasn't the experience that I had remembered it to be. The beauty lies in the controlled quality of the peat presentation. In the meantime, the Cask Strengh Lagavulin 12 yo is usually very much worth your while. Got a link to a reliable review? Benromach Cask Strength It's rich and warm. Aroma is, but of course, predominantly peaty: clean leather, smoked, cigar box, etc. Right now, my favorites are Glenfarclas 21 and Old Pulteney You know, TA, with a rascal as charming as you are, the first thing that entered my mind when you prominently featured your vasectomy to start the review, was that it was something of a dating move By Liquor.
It is a pity, that now I can not express - it is very occupied. But I will return - I will necessarily write that I think on this question.
