Krakoa alongside it's twin island Arakko was once the island known as Okkara who ruled by who was ruled by Apocalypse and his family but the island would eventually be split by the twilight sword creating Krakoa and Arakko. When Professor X detected a powerful mutant signal on a remote island in the middle of the pacific using Cerebro , he dispatched the original team of X-Men to investigate. It would turn out that the island Krakoa was the mutant that Xavier detected. Krakoa would capture the X-Men in order to feed off of their strong mutant energies. Xavier would send two other rescue teams to bring back the X-Men.

How did it come into being? Is it sentient? And why are the X-Men living on it? Originally, it was thought to have been located near a nuclear bomb testing sight, and the radiation from it caused the ecosystem of the island to become a sentient hivemind, which was later proved to be false. Krakoa actually started out life as a bigger island, known as Okkara, which was attacked centuries ago by hoards of daemons, brought forth by an enemy wielding the Twilight Sword first mentioned in Dawn of X. The mutant Apocalypse and his original Horsemen fought off these daemons, but it proved impossible to defeat them. Instead, Apocalypse sealed the breach created by the Twilight Sword by cutting the island in two. Krakoa is a sentient being, as its original form of Okkara was. The island has its own language and communicates solely through the mutant Cypher, who can understand any language instinctively. Of a kind, yes, Krakoa has powers.

Splitting it in two formed Krakoa and Arakko. Krakoa was believed to have been a very small island in the Pacific Ocean that was located close to where some nuclear bombing tests were done. It was thought that the radiation somehow turned the island's ecosystem into a single hive-mind entity. Krakoa was part of a greater land called Okkara , but it was attacked by an enemy wielding the Twilight Sword , causing a horde of Daemons to spill forth unto Okkara, and splitting it into two beings; Krakoa and Arakko. Apocalypse and his First Horsemen fought a bloody war against the daemons. When it became clear that they could not win, Apocalypse sealed the breach, with Genesis, the First Horsemen and the other mutants of Okkara remaining on Arakko, which became trapped in the dimension of Amenth. Krakoa, having been part of the whole that was once Okkara, and with Okkara being an essential part of the Celestial-designed mechanism called the Machine , Krakoa is protected by the Eternal Principles. The mutant Cypher discovered that in the year , a ship underway to Australia, was wrecked. One of its inhabitants, a mutant named Silas Ellerby , was the only survivor.

The X-Men and their mutant nation of Krakoa are on the brink of a big, likely tragic change in the upcoming 'Fall of X' crossover, which Marvel has been building to for some time. With the announcement of what Marvel is billing as the final new 'Fall of X' title , a Jean Grey solo limited series , it's becoming even more clear that the Krakoa era is about to change drastically, if not entirely come to an end.
