Saladan Town in the north of the island is now the largest town in Koh Lanta. As you enter Koh Lanta Old Town from the main road the first place you come to is a small roundabout with a large Buddhist shrine in the middle, koh lanta city centre. Koh Lanta is located in the southern part of Krabi Province. It is an archipelago made up of 52 islands. Before the First World War, Saladan at the northernmost point of the island was the checkpoint for all tax-paying boats en route to the Malay peninsula. Today, Saladan became the business and commercial centre where most visitors arrive on the island. Koh Lanta Yai has a very diverse cultural mix with Thai-Muslim, Thai-Chinese and the original Sea Gypsies, all having lived on the island in harmony for hundreds of years. Koh Lanta has it all. On the east coast, years old Lanta Old Town has remained very similar to what it was all those years ago.

Lanta Old Town was originally a sea gypsy settlement. Over the decades it transformed into a village influenced by trade. Now you can enjoy many shops, restaurants and homes built on stilts above the sea level. This is great when the tide is in and also overlooks other islands and the mainland allowing breathtaking views. The Old Town has a distinct Chinese influence and a very slow, laid back feel.
