It is best known as the setting for the Trojan War. Troy was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt during its four thousand years of occupation. As a result, the site is divided into nine archaeological layers , each corresponding to a city built on the ruins of the previous. Among the early layers, Troy II is notable for its wealth and imposing architecture. The site was excavated by Heinrich Schliemann and Frank Calvert starting in Under the ruins of the classical city, they found the remains of numerous earlier settlements. Several of these layers resemble literary depictions of Troy, leading some scholars to conclude that there is a kernel of truth underlying the legends.

Seven years later, in , he returned to Gordion with his brother Gustav to carry out a single, three-month season of excavation, among the first controlled field projects to take place in central Anatolia. Young began excavations at Gordion in , under the auspices of the University of Pennsylvania Museum. On the Citadel Mound he concentrated on the eastern half, where he uncovered major portions of both the earlier and later Phrygian citadels, and also of the overlying Hellenistic towns. In the first years of excavation, the presence of still earlier Bronze Age settlement was attested through a deep sounding. Only limited investigation, however, was to be carried out in these levels. Young also opened 30 burial tumuli, ranging in date from the ninth century BCE into Hellenistic times. A few tumuli were found to overlie earlier remains, such as Middle Phrygian houses, and relatively humble cemeteries, one of Middle Phrygian date, the other going back to the time of the Hittite Old Kingdom 17th—15th centuries BCE. Mudbrick fortification walls extending from the bastion enclosed a Lower Town. The destruction of the bastion in the s BCE, after a siege, no doubt reflects the Persian capture of Gordion.

Gordion's location at the confluence of the Sakarya and Porsuk rivers gave it a strategic location with control over fertile land. Occupation at the site is attested from the Early Bronze Age c. Gordion is the type site of Phrygian civilization , and its well-preserved destruction level of c. The long tradition of tumuli at the site is an important record of elite monumentality and burial practice during the Iron Age. Its course changed several times, ultimately moving to the west side of the mound, where it is now. This was a relatively recent change, most likely occurring during the 19th century. Gordion was inhabited from at least the Early Bronze Age , c. By the end of this period it displayed ceramic commonalities with communities as far west as the Troad and as far east as Cilicia. During the Middle Bronze Age , Gordion came under the influence of the Hittites , with administrative seals evident at the site. Late Bronze Age Gordion was part of the Hittite Empire and located at the western edge of its heartland.
