Douglas Gjertsen is a swimmer who has competed for the United States. He competed at the and Summer Olympic Games. At his first Olympics in , Gjertsen helped his American teammates Troy Dalbey , Matthew Cetlinski , and Matthew Biondi set a new world record to defend their title in the men's 4x metres freestyle relay. He also contributed to another gold-medal triumph for the Americans in the 4x metres freestyle relay by swimming through the second leg in the heats. While he celebrated his victories with Gjertsen in a Korean bar, they removed a wall decoration of a marble lion's head and were arrested by the Korean police. Dalbey and Gjertsen left the U.

It's not often that one player makes more free throws than the opposing team attempts. But such was the case for Gjertsen last Thursday, when Weber State - the Big Sky's hottest basketball team - defeated Northern Arizona in the teams' conference opener at Ogden, Utah. Gjertsen, the league scoring leader, racked up 26 points for Weber, making just four field goals but swishing of free throws. The Wildcats toed the line 41 times and made 34, while Northern Arizona was 11 of The game matched two of the four teams expected to battle for the Big Sky title, joining Montana and Eastern Washington. But NAU had four starters foul out, and two more players with four fouls apiece by the time the physical contest ended. Natalie Metz, who finished with a career-high 23 points, helped NAU chip away at a point deficit with six minutes remaining. The Wildcats closed within four points on Teresa Diaz's 3-pointer with 14 seconds left, but Diaz was whistled for her fifth foul following the basket, and the NAU bench then drew a technical foul. NAU is very athletic, and they work hard offensively and get to the offensive glass. NAU bounced back two nights later to notch a victory at Idaho State.
