Every character can choose from four sets of starting Ability Trees depending on their class, with additional Specializations that are unlocked further into the game. With 3 additional specializations to choose from - that's 7 Ability Trees in total, with each tree containing 4 Tiers of abilities including Ability Upgrades. Abilities play a crucial role in Dragon Age : Inquisition. The Inquisitor and their companions can choose from a complex ability tree, selecting the ones that best fit their role. The game allows both active straight-up attacks and passive changes in mechanics or upgrades abilities, and players need a balanced combination to excel. Each class has its own set of abilities, but only a few slots available. Players must therefore choose wisely, crafting each character to fulfill a specific purpose within the party. They are perhaps the most versatile of the classes because they can be great support from the sidelines, like mages, or active participants of the battle, like warriors. Rogues can also silently move around the field, and their sneaky ways can disrupt the action. Among their many tricks, rogues can use the Knockout Powder ability. As its name suggests, it puts enemies to sleep for a brief time, allowing for the user to do considerable damage and even finish them off.

Skills are abilities which all playable characters have access to. Unlike spells for mages and talents for warriors and rogues , skills are abilities that are not designed to be activated during combat, though many of them still relate to combat. Many skills also require a specific number in a related attribute in order to unlock them. The Warden starts with two skills determined by class and origin and 1 additional skill point. Rogues then receive 1 skill point every 2 levels, while warriors and mages receive 1 skill every 3 levels.
The Inquisitor and their companions can select from a variety of abilities to define their character in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Each ability tree contains active abilities, upgrades, and passive abilities. Active abilities have diamond-shaped icons. They can be mapped to your hotbar and then used in combat. Upgrades are attached to an ability and make it stronger. Passive abilities have circular icons and are permanent boosts to your character that are always active.
