Far from the Sun is the sixth studio album by Finnish heavy metal band Amorphis. It was the first album to feature drummer Jan Rechberger since 's Tales from the Thousand Lakes , replacing Pekka Kasari who had quit the band to spend more time with his family. It was their last album to feature Pasi Koskinen on vocals. The American release is packaged in a slipcase and features five bonus tracks and a video for "Evil Inside". The song, "Darkrooms" is also a bonus track for the Japanese edition. The album was re-released in Europe in by Nuclear Blast.

It's a special thing when an album can fully immerse you. Some albums build toward that immersion slowly and benefit from interludes and close study of the lyrics, and others seem to possess the ability to transport you to another world from the opening note, less like settling into a novel and more like walking through a portal. Tales from the Thousand Lakes is one such album. Lyrics plucked from the verses of the Kalevala, the Finnish epic poem, provide a figurative and elegant base for the band to build a beautiful, old-world atmosphere around. It's not a linear story told across the songs, but having all originated from the same place there is nevertheless a very conceptual, cohesive feel. Themes of folk stoicism, the sense of time passing both for individuals and the world as a whole, universal good and evil, sorrow, but also wisdom and acceptance. On the surface most of the album is straightforward musically, not overly technical in performance or composition, but the way the band layers simple grooves and melodies is sublime, achieving a profundity that is much more than the sum of its parts. When there's a soaring melody it's never cheesy, when it's heavy it never feels too obvious. Even when it's an upbeat groove or what appears to be a standard death metal chug, it's never "fun" in a rock n' roll way, nor is it "heavy" in the most typical death metal sense, but instead comes from a place that is more neutral, much like the folk stories it's paired with, and is more powerful because of it.
