The sorority is one of the nation's largest Greek-letter organizations, having had more than , members in 1, chapters in the United States and several other countries. Howard faculty member Ethel T. Robinson encouraged Hedgemon by relating her own observances of sorority life at the Women's College at Brown University. Robinson and other female students had not been able to participate in the existing sororities because of their race.
