Last week, we created a visual guide to identifying Chevy trucks , including some of the subtle changes and options for each model year. This week, we're continuing that theme to cover more recent GM trucks. If you've ever seen one of these classic trucks and wondered what year it is, or you're curious if the restoration parts on your truck match its original specifications, read through our Chevy truck history guide below. We've included important notes for each year and generation. This year marked a major change in Chevy truck history with this new body style. Front suspension is a newly designed torsion bar system. Rear suspension is a coil spring and trailing arm design. The low mounted grill consists of two horizontal bars connecting dual headlamps. Center opening of grill has a three louver insert. Front of hood has oval openings on each side. Park lamps fit in center of vertically louvered bezels and fit in these hood openings, Windshield is a wrap around design. Front windshield pillars slope forward. Vent windows are wider at top than bottom. The dashboard consists of two large arches on either side.

Although it had humble beginnings as purely a utilitarian vehicle, it has now evolved into something that offers ample passenger comfort and space, all the luxuries you can ask for, and more power and performance than most people need. How did pickup trucks go from being no frills work-a-day vehicles to what they have become today? It all had to start somewhere, and this Chevrolet pickup I spotted at a Chevrolet-Cadillac dealer represents the beginning of the evolution. The early s was a time of innovation for General Motors. It had the air-cooled rear engine Corvair, the Tempest with the rope drive and rear transaxle, the aluminum V8s and turbocharged engines. Without a doubt they had the most car-like styling of any truck to date.
General Motors lit the afterburners on its light trucks for , with radical new Jet-Age styling and a totally revamped chassis under two-wheel drives. Beneath the skin, the cab roof was reinforced by an inner panel ribbed for increased rigidity, and there was insulation sandwiched between the layers. The cabs boasted a 26 percent increase in windshield area over their predecessors for a commanding view of the road, plus there was nearly 6 inches more hip room, more shoulder room, head room, leg room, and new door sealing. The workaday stepside was still available, though it carried over with only minor changes from the second-series pickups. These trucks rode and handled more car-like, thanks to changes to the front and rear suspension. As the decade wore on though, GM made the trucks a little more conventional with evolutionary changes. In , GM switched from a torsion bar front suspension to a coil spring front end.
