Patrice Fagnant-MacArthur explains how the day Rosary novena has become her go-to prayer. I learned to pray the Rosary from my mother. From the time I was small, it was part of our daily routine. Even as a teenager and young adult, we prayed the Rosary together every day sometimes very, very late at night after I got home from work or a night out. A day Rosary novena consists of 27 days of petition followed by 27 days of thanksgiving, whether or not you have received the answer to your prayers. It can be hard to offer thanksgiving when no answer is in sight, but it demonstrates faith that the answer will come. Once I was married, I continued to pray my Rosary daily and the Rosary novena on an as-needed basis. As my children grew older, those as-needed novenas became more and more frequent. The Rosary novena book my mother gave me as a teen became worn with use, held together with lots of Scotch tape. After many years, I broke down and purchased a new one. These days, I pray the day Rosary novena as a perpetual novena.

Originated in the late 19th century in Naples, Italy, the 54 Day Novena is attributed to a young girl suffering from an illness thought to be incurable. Calling on Mary for help, Mary appeared to her and promised her healing if she prayed three novenas. The girl did so, and was miraculously healed. In a later apparition, Mary specified that the full prayer should have 3 novenas in petition, and 3 novenas in thanksgiving. The 54 Day Novena is a beautiful devotion that consists of saying a Rosary for 54 days in a row with a few extra prayers within the Rosary. A novena means praying 9 days in a row, so the 54 Day Novena is, in essence, 6 novenas: the first 3 novenas over the first 27 days are said in petition — asking Mary for her prayers for a particular intention. The remaining 3 novenas said over the last 27 days are in thanksgiving, whether or not you received what you brought to prayer. This novena is a prayer for all seasons of life.

One Rosary is said each day, praying the set of Mysteries listed for that day, Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, or Glorious with the Spiritual Communion prayer after the Rosary.
