Yamaha flutes are great instruments, often getting a better sound than higher level flutes made by their competitors. This flute has the specs of a standard student flute, BUT with a solid sterling silver headjoint, which will increase your tone, articulation and volume control potential. It also has a "Split E Mechanism"- Basically a fun little arm added to the flute to make troublesome "High E" sound more easily. I would recommend this flute as an upgrade from a student level Gemeinhardt, Artley, Bundy, Selmer, Blessing, or other lesser brand, as a first instrument following a rental flute, or for an ambitious beginner who wants the opportunity to learn on a flute with a sterling silver headjoint from the get go. This would also be a great flute for an adult learner or doubler. This flute comes with French style slim-line case in excellent condition, cleaning rod and soft leather outer case. Note that the outer case, while in great shape, has a name embroidered on the inside. This can't be seen from the outside of the case. Email JDMinstrumentsales gmail. I understand the main difference is that the YFL has a silver head-joint, and have heard that this makes a significant difference. Has anybody got experience with these two flutes, or opinions on whether the silver head-joint or other aspects of the YFL would make a difference?
But I would recommend anyone who is looking for an up-grade to consider and try out the Yamaha YFL I have had mine for 4 months now and am delighted with the warm rich sound and relatively easy blowing headjoint solid silver. At first I had wondered whether the silver headjoint would make such a difference, but the very first try convinced me. All three octaves came with an evenness of sound that was surprising and almost effortless. Well, a lot of practise goes into making the flute play 'effortlessly', but I mean that the sound was different: stronger, clearer, deeper, without me changing my breathing or embouchure. The mechanism was similar to my old student model Yamaha 21, only quieter. One can stroke the keys, so to say, and move on, trusting the sound will readily come. The instrument comes with the typical Yamaha hard plastic, velvet lined case which holds the flute safely and well in place, and plastic cleaning rod. I have supplemented this with a case cover to insulate against temperature swings in the winter. I have found that even with a high quality microfibre cleaning cloth, the flute shows tiny scratches.

Walls are drawn upward from the body material, giving the flute a broad, light sound. Covered or Plateau keys are easy to use. The pad cup is covered so it will seal the tonehole any time the key is closed. This is common with beginners or others who may not always press the center of the key. Many advanced players prefer the open feel of Ring keys for subtle control of their tone. Intermediate and Standard model French system flutes come with key plugs to seal the hole until players have become adept at covering the holes with their fingers.
