Of course, an equally valid critical response questions the notion of "truth" and observes that the free play of signs and signifiers unmoored from a confining narrative core is a potent artistic force driving the work. This of course is an invalid critique, as XKCD exists intertextually with all other webcomics and is in fact enjoined to make use of and amplify the key ideas of those other comics. Note the phallic symbolism of the letters "X" and "K", and the subordinate positions of the vaginal characters "C" and "D", the last of which represents semiotically the supressed but controlling desire of the male writer to maintain a pregnant state in the female reader. You don't HAVE to use complicated words and sentences, you know. No one's impressed.

Relax, the explain xkcd wiki answers all your questions. You too can smile at the in jokes, understand the math, and get the obscure references. Yeah, I tend to gauge the obscurity of a given xkcd by the server load of this site-- if I don't understand a particular comic but then it takes 5 seconds for the explainxkcd homepage to load, I know I'm not alone. That one wasn't particularly obscure was it? I'm trying to gauge if my wheelhouse has shifted to 80's and 90's nostalgia in the same manner that what is obvious and funny to me is an obscure reference for kids these days. At first sight, this appears to be the famous Carl Sagan commentary, upon the Pale Blue Dot image of Earth, a picture taken by the Voyager 1 probe in at that time 6 billion kilometers away but having been transmitted back to Earth to be appreciated as one of the most iconic 'photos of Earth from space', along with Earthrise and The Blue Marble. Sagan's written, and later spoken, words evoke how the lives of all of us are somehow confined to barely more than a single pixel's-worth of existence upon an already zoomed-in view of space. From the caption, however, it appears that 'Carl' is not looking at an image.
