Washington and Lee University is a small liberal arts college nestled in the Virginia mountains. We are known for our personal and engaging undergraduate experience and highly regarded School of Law. And because of the strength of our need-based aid, only w&l fraction of families choose to take out optional loans. We are a close-knit, w&l, residential campus where students build lifelong friendships by living on campus, w&l, w&l and studying together, participating in clubs and activities, and serving the community.

Established in as Augusta Academy , it is among the oldest institutions of higher learning in the United States. The institution consists of three academic units: the college itself; the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics; and the School of Law. The classical school from which Washington and Lee descended was established in by Scots-Irish Presbyterian pioneers and soon named Augusta Academy, [7] about 20 miles 32 km north of its present location. The academy granted its first bachelor's degree in Liberty Hall is said to have admitted its first African American student when John Chavis , a free black , enrolled in

As a liberal arts university, students are encouraged to study what interests them, conduct research , and pursue global learning. Our hands-on curriculum is designed to expose you to all we have to offer and help you develop the skills you need to get the most out of your education. We offer 36 majors and 41 minors and programs often found only at larger schools, including business, journalism, engineering and a top-tier graduate law school. We augment the liberal arts and sciences with offerings not commonly found at a small college. Our core curriculum, combined with the breadth of our course catalog, encourages students to make connections across disciplines.
