The National Weather Service has issued a region-wide Winter Storm Warning for the overnight storm that's expected to produce between inches. The storm will start Friday night around 9 p.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday issued a state of emergency for western New York and already activated members of New York National Guard ahead of this weekend's winter storm. Western New York and parts of the north country are "bracing for a classic lake effect snowstorm starting mid-Saturday," she said during a midday news briefing in Manhattan. Declaring the state of emergency early on helps state officials prepare for the storm, and to move contractors and state workers into place to clear snow and respond as needed. National guard members are expected to be in place in western New York by Saturday morning, she said. Utility crews are already in place throughout western New York to assist if communities lose power during the storm, she said. Some parts of the Greater Toronto Area are now under a winter storm warning ahead of a system that could dump up to 25 centimetres of snow beginning Friday night. However, on Thursday evening, the federal weather agency upgraded the advisory to a winter storm warning. Those areas could see peak snowfall rates of three to five centimetres per hour. Environment Canada said 10 to 25 centimetres of snow could fall by the time it tapers off, adding that there is a risk of a short period of freezing rain Friday night. The NWS expressed uncertainty as to the levels of snow expected to accumulate in the region, but said it could settle as low as 5, feet and as high as 7, feet. In New Mexico's Sandia and Manzano Mountains, up to five inches of snow could accumulate, with nine inches possible atop the Sandia Crest.
