The Infinity Stones were six immensely powerful gem-like objects tied to different aspects of the universe, created by the Big Bang [3] from six singularities. Only beings of immense power can directly wield the Stones, such as Celestials , and the Mad Titan Thanos. Lesser beings would face dire consequences: Johann Schmidt was cursed to Vormir to guard the Soul Stone after touching an active Tesseract , Jane Foster became ill after being exposed to the Aether , Carina exploded when she touched the Power Stone ; however, these effects can be reduced if a group is sharing the power among themselves.

The Infinity Gems originally referred to as Soul Gems and later as Infinity Stones are six fictional gems appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics , named after and embodying various aspects of existence. The gems can grant whoever wields them various powers in accordance to the aspect of existence they represent, and have the potential of turning the wielder into a god-like being when the main six Mind, Power, Reality, Soul, Space, and Time are held together. Thus, they are among the most powerful and sought-after items in the Marvel Universe ; playing important roles in several storylines, in which they were wielded by characters such as Thanos and Adam Warlock. Some of these stories depict additional Infinity Gems or similar objects. Although, the Infinity Gems altogether give its user nigh-omnipotence, the Gems only function on the universe they belong to and not on alternate realities. The Gems have appeared in several media adaptations outside of comics, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe film franchise, where they are called Infinity Stones and have their colors altered. These changes were later adapted into the comics. The first appearance of an Infinity Gem occurred in in Marvel Premiere 1. It was originally called a "Soul Gem". In the limited series The Thanos Quest , Thanos refers to the entire main set as "Infinity Gems" for the first time. In this storyline, he steals most of the Gems for the second time and reveals the Gems to be the last remains of an omnipotent being. Although he easily repels an attack by Earth's heroes and other cosmic entities including Eternity , the Gauntlet is eventually stolen from him by Nebula , who undoes the last 24 hours, including his mass killings.

In Avengers: Infinity War , the 19th film of the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Mad Titan finally after receiving several makeovers obtained all six Infinity Stones, which granted him enough power to make such destruction possible. Throughout their long existence, Infinity Stones were at the center of some of the best Marvel cosmic stories , and most recently, they have been included in the MCU as well, becoming a global phenomenon and something that marked Thanos as one of the most popular villains of all time. Space Stone, like the rest of the Infinity Stones, was created when an entity called Nemesis, with seemingly incomprehensible powers, committed suicide. The first time we are aware of the existence of Space Stone is when Thanos learns of the location of Space Gem, which was at the time held by a powerful entity known as Xambor. Space Stone was part of the famous Infinity Gauntlet storyline , and later, during the Secret Wars storyline, it was destroyed when Captain America used the Infinity Gauntlets. Following the aftermath of the Secret Wars storyline, Space Stone appeared again, albeit in a different color. Regarding the color of the Space Infinity Stone, originally, it was purple. During the Secret Wars storyline, it was red.
