Bristol-based sea shanty group The Longest Johns explain why 'Wellerman' isn't technically a sea shanty and why, in fact, only about a third of their repertoire could be classed as shanties.
The song refers to the " wellermen ", pointing to supply ships owned by the Weller brothers , who were amongst the earliest European settlers of Otago. In early , a cover by Scottish singer Nathan Evans became a viral hit on the social media site TikTok , leading to a "social media craze" around sea shanties and maritime songs. The history of whaling in New Zealand stretches from the late eighteenth century to In , the British-born Weller brothers Edward, George and Joseph, who had immigrated to Sydney in , founded a whaling station at Otakou near modern Dunedin in the South Island of New Zealand, seventeen years before Dunedin was established. At its peak in , the Otakou station was producing tons of whale oil a year [6] and became the centre of a network of seven stations that formed a highly profitable enterprise for the Wellers, employing as many as 85 people at Otago alone. The song's lyrics describe a whaling ship called the Billy o' Tea and its hunt for a right whale.

Nathan Evans born 19 December is a Scottish singer. Evans first gained fame in by posting videos of himself singing sea shanties on social media service TikTok. In , he released a cover of the folk song " Wellerman " which peaked at the top of the UK Singles Chart and also charted in several other countries. Before launching his music career, Evans was a postal worker with the Royal Mail , in Airdrie , near Glasgow. Evans is married with one child, born in April Evans had been posting performances of pop and folk songs to TikTok before beginning to post sea shanties. Evans subsequently posted videos of himself singing "The Scotsman" and New Zealand folk song about whaling " Wellerman " in December In January , Evans signed a three-single recording contract with Polydor Records , releasing his official version of "Wellerman" on 22 January Writing about the nature of Evans's success during the time of the COVID pandemic , Amanda Petrusich wrote in The New Yorker : "It seems possible that after nearly a year of solitude and collective self-banishment, and of crushing restrictions on travel and adventure, the shantey might be providing a brief glimpse into a different, more exciting way of life, a world of sea air and pirates and grog.
