But know that have been practicing I cant seem to get the bead to flatten out like it does running in the flat postion, I dont know for sure it is dropping but it does not flatten it got hump in the middle of the weld. And on other question on gettig certified. I work for an awning compay and we have been getting into bigger stuctures such as 10x10 coloms and they want everybody to be certified but at the shop the foreman doesnt buy or rod we only use or can you get certified using that rod. Thats why ihave been practing at the house with and still need more pratcice hence all the question. Thaks again everyone. By ZCat Date Hey Elliiot, There are many different ways to weld and a bunch of variables. Here is something to try. Keep the arc VERY tight. If you are weaving any, try to spend more time on the sides than in the middle. This helps me even with a narrow weaving that makes a bead nearly the same as a stringer bead.
Remeber it is the plate that does the cooling. Posting Quick Reply - Please Wait. View the Digital Edition.
Figure 1 SMAW, or stick welding, requires a certain mastery of skills, and vertical and overhead stick welding is that much more difficult-one of the reasons the specialty is in such great demand. Vertical and overhead stick welding have never been in such high demand. Heavy construction continues see Figure 1 in the southeast U. Ironworkers, pipe fitters, boilermakers, and shipbuilders are working to meet a new global demand for development and energy. At the core of this work lies an advanced welding position that requires skill beyond the preferred horizontal position—vertical-up shielded metal arc welding, or stick welding.

Lit up first few beads over the weekend and had no problems with flat and filet welds but can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong with my vertical up for The skinny globby stringers were all laied in vertical.

When you are welding uphill with …or any other rod for that matter, you typically will use less amperage than you would for flat or horizontal welds. So how hot is hot enough? So here is what I did… First joint was done at amps.

You will be suprised at the difference in your toes sides of the weld if you just hang out a bit pause while running your caps As you travel upwards, your material gets hotter and hotter. When weaving vertically up with a electrode, zigzag back and forth, and allow each puddle section to freeze in place in time to weld up to the next stair step. Easily access valuable industry resources now with full access to the digital edition of The Tube and Pipe Journal. So it looks like fidos butthole. Because a vertical-up puddle needs to freeze quickly and in place, a low amperage setting is needed to maintain control. Top is I'd guess around with an ultra tight arc and fast side to side mini Zs. The Fabricator is North America's leading magazine for the metal forming and fabricating industry. BTW you are to be commended for practicing at home on your own time. Great write up I have used this rod as a go to rod for 30 years. This characteristic is made possible by the addition of iron powder to the coating of the stick electrode. I for the life of me cannot get the hang of vertical up, every other position with it is like cake. Yeah, it really did fell like I was running it too hot so I'll give it another try this weekend. With any out-of-position welding, all of the standard safety precautions that apply to flat and horizontal welding should be increased because of the added risk of falling molten metal and spatter.
And if a WPS specifies stringer beads as opposed to a weave, then you need to use stringer beads. Personally, I prefer a weave in most cases, but I have been on jobs where stringer beads were required. There are some benefits to stringer beads vs weaves as far as heat input, residual stresses, and grain growth

Removing paint, rust and mill scale will help with the undercut problem too. Read more from this issue. How high or low in the weld pool as you travel up will also affect the build up and undercut. By aevald Date Yeah, I just looked in the fridge and realized I didn't think correctly when I typed that. Lower to about amps. Don't blink, and don't breathe On a code job, you would never get away with it with a reputable qc department in place. Stick electrodes with an AWS classification of are considered the first choice because of their low iron powder content see Figure 2.
