It has been regarded as the most competitive trail ultramarathon in the world. The announcement by UTMB and Vail was met with outrage by the North American trail community, it has been seen as a corporate takeover of the existing race that was built up by the local organiser Gary Robbins, with fears it is attempting to create a monopoly by taking over current community based races and turning them into a profit centred event which is not inline with the values of the community. The race takes place once a year on either the last weekend in August or the first weekend of September in the Alps. It has a distance of approximately kilometres mi , and a total elevation gain of around 10, metres 32, ft. It is widely regarded as one of the most difficult foot races in the world, and one of the largest with more than 2, starters. The races have strict entry and qualification requirements attained by accumulating enough race points through qualifying trail races over the previous two-year period. While the best runners complete the loop in slightly more than 20 hours, most runners take 32 to 46 hours to reach the finish line.
Dauwalter led from early on, and with her in such good form, it was clear that, barring accident or injury, all bets were off over the ultimate winner. But in every other way, this was the running event of the year- if not the decade. As the crowds started to build later in the race as the runners emerged from the night, the atmosphere was electric with everyone crowding together to witness Dauwalter close in on history. Moving towards Trient km the frenzy reached new levels. The crowds near enough surrounded her, parting like the red sea to allow her to pass but not wanting to move too far away from this master of ultrarunning. There were flares, there were banners and there in the middle of the throng was Dauwalter, the number one bib attached to her Tour de France style yellow jersey as she travelled to her coronation as the Queen of ultrarunning in Chamonix. The frenzy continued in the small French town, which over the course of 20 years has become the home of ultrarunning itself. But the celebration around Dauwalter makes sense when you begin to appreciate the sheer scale of what she has now accomplished.

No American man had ever won the race in its 20 year history, but Walmsley has finally broken the barrier to claim the title at his fifth attempt. Jim Walmsley is undeniably one of the greatest ultrarunners in the world, but one thing alluded him and indeed all US male ultrarunners- the UTMB. In he was fifth, in he was a DNF, in he was another DNF and then in , having moved to France entirely to prepare for the race, he fell to a fourth place finish after having looked like he was finally going to win it. That race made it feel like there was a curse around American men at the UTMB- but Walmsley redoubled his efforts.
