This review comprises two parts, given that Urban Alley Docklands is a pub of two parts: brewpub and brewery. This is cavernous space, ground level, within touching distance of the ill-fated Melbourne Star. With the two dominant features, the large bar in middle and working brewery in the rear, The Urban Alley UA takes on a modern industrial look, with sealed concrete floors, bare wooden tables, and brick fixtures. Seating easily accommodates plus at any one time. UA clearly has association with Motorsport Penrite , with its livery on display.

Deep gold with soft haze and a fluffy white head, the nose is a bouquet of tropical and stone fruit while on the palate a soft acidity balances sweetness with accents of lemon and lime pith with a nod towards bitterness. A subtle herbal note of marjoram adds to the complexity, as does a bittersweet whiff of pineapple skin. The mouthfeel is clean with some palate weight on the tip of your tongue. The finish has some moderate bitterness that ends with a more rounded herbal, citrus pith bitterness and a lingering taste of overripe ruby grapefruit skin. A gorgeous IPA. The name says it all. But one that takes its ethical responsibilities to the environment seriously as well as being locally owned and fiercely independent. Best to get the tram to Docklands and then walk the short distance in. The fit out is both incredibly sleek and cosy and welcoming. There are rows of golden lights as if you were heading into a German Biergarten beer garden at night And there is plenty of outside seating which will be perfect for hot summer nights. Lots of nooks and crannies for a cool ale. But even in winter, this will be a great space with large inset log style fires. And pet lovers can rejoice as you can bring your pooch into this outside area as well. The inside area reminded me of being inside the big top.
Born out of our home in The District Docklands this IPA gives off tropical fruit aromas like apricot, honeydew, mango and papaya.

So having spent some years bringing international beer experiences to Australia, Urban Alley feels like a fitting evolution where those owners are bringing local beer to new craft beer drinkers. The venue itself is an expansive one with two outdoor areas and an industrial but welcoming interior that can host close to people. The brewery also frequently brews a range of limited releases, from hazy IPAs, to stouts, sours and big barleywines, with both those core beers and limiteds having found success at beer awards over the years.
