This post is a reflection on my experience through all stages of the co-op process from student to employer. Co-operative education Co-op integrates the academic education classroom-based learning of interested and qualified students with relevant, supervised, and paid work experience work-based learning with employer organizations. Co-op students gain valuable skills that help guide them through their academic education, as well as prepare them for future job markets upon graduation. Co-op is optional and supplementary to academic requirements of the degree. Students who wish to be considered for co-op will be selected on the basis of academic performance and suitability for the work environment. Total enrolment is subject to the current state of the market as well as the resources available to support coaching and job development. Acceptance into the program does not guarantee students employment in each work term. Students admitted into the Science Co-op Program are required to accept and comply with the Program's Terms and Conditions. A Co-op administration and workshop fee is to be paid by all students accepted into the program. Co-op students will be registered in the appropriate Co-op courses for each work term, once a suitable position is confirmed, and will be required to pay the Co-op course fee see Program and Course Fees. The normal regulations governing withdrawal from courses notwithstanding, students are not permitted to withdraw from the Co-op course without permission of the Co-op Program. Each successfully completed Co-op course will be assigned three credits and will be recorded on the student's transcript. In order to graduate with the co-operative education designation, a student must have completed the required number of work terms in addition to the normal academic requirements of the specialization. Co-operative education course credits cannot be used in lieu of or to complement academic course credits required by the specialization. After completing my 8-month work term at Copperleaf, I came back as a DevOps Engineer for part-time work to balance both studies and work. My final co-op placement was on the FIFA game team at Electronics Arts; this led to a full time position with them right after I graduated, ubc science co-op. By the end of my 8 months working there, my understanding of software ubc science co-op to an entirely new level.

It states on the science coop website that we must complete all four work terms equiv. How important is the co-op designation as opposed to just stating on your resume that you've worked with your employer for a certain time? The reason I am asking is because I would love to go on co-op but a 16 month commitment means I will have to give up 2 summers, during which I would like to venture other opportunities Is the work term something that is negotiable with your employer? For most science coop programs such as biochem and micb 16 months commitment is required, in fact I am on my micb coop term at work as I type this.

Students should apply to the Co-op program of their current major. Students in a double majors or combined majors program only need to submit ONE application to the program of their choice. Looks like you have still not decided your specialization. No worries. There is always time. UBC Science Co-op works closely with local, national, and international employers to develop challenging, career-related positions for our students. Co-operative Education Co-op integrates students' academic education classroom-based learning with relevant, supervised, and paid work experience work-based learning. During a placement, the student will be supervised, evaluated, and paid by an employer. Undergraduate students earn a degree with the Co-operative Education designation by completing the required number of work terms in addition completing the regular academic requirements in a department. A Co-op work term does not replace, or add academic course credits for that term, and the credits do not count towards graduation. For most programs, being a UBC Science Co-op student will extend the student's degree program by one year.

At UBC University of British Columbia , each faculty runs its own co-op program to help match employers with students in fields related to their studies. We felt that Copperleaf is more than deserving of this award. In order to graduate with the co-operative education designation, a student must have completed the required number of work terms in addition to the normal academic requirements of the specialization. Work terms are not negotiable, you can either do 4 months at 4 different companies or do 8 months and then another 8 months at different companies but must add up to 16 months in the end. Being an introvert myself it can be difficult to meet new people, but it has been a breeze getting to know people in my team and around the office. Josh: There is a really good culture here, and I believe that the software we create has a huge potential for widespread use. The reason I am asking is because I would love to go on co-op but a 16 month commitment means I will have to give up 2 summers, during which I would like to venture other opportunities My co-op coordinator recommended that I apply to locations outside of Vancouver and lo and behold - I landed my first job as a Game Developer in Kelowna BC. You can expect a friendly and encouraging work environment, which makes my experience awesome working here.
