Turn closet into mudroom
With two in school now, and four in footwear, we have quickly run out of space for book bags, shoes, and coats. The wheels starting turning, and I took a little look at my own coat closet.
Right when you walk into our house we have this coat closet. I had been wanting to put in a DIY mudroom closet somewhere that we could sit to put our shoes on, hang coats, etc… but I had never taken on a DIY project this big. Quite frankly… power tools scare me a bit. If you are reading thing and considering a mudroom closet makeover… I promise you can do it if you follow these steps! The whole process took me about 4 days. This project requires a ton of planning. I drew out a diagram on a scrap piece of paper and took a bunch of measurements.

I am back today with a little more information about how we converted our hallway coat closet into a mudroom. Great timing huh? It was madness but it was done in time for the holiday and it has worked out great. It kind of makes me break out in hives just to see it. Much better! I try to just keep the ones we are wearing every day in here, I admit that it will be nice when it warms up to have less hanging on the hooks. He built the basic shelves then added trim and molding so everything looked nice. I have been asked about the doors that were on the closet. See how the doors opened in to each other? So while my kids were grabbing backpacks and coats inevitably one would be heading out the door while the other was trying to get in the closet and a battle would ensue. Now they just reach in and grab what they want and go. I still have the hooks on the left side of the hall for guests, purses etc. As I mentioned in the first post, I spent many hours trying to find the right baskets.

Our coat closet was fairly organized, using file boxes as shelves for shoes and wood boxes on the shelf for winter hats, scarves, and gloves. We are known to use file boxes as shelving, in order to stay organized, while we wait to do what we really want to do. Still, the shoes always end up messy. This post contains affiliate links. Follow me on Instagram and YouTube! The cost went toward the wood and coat hooks. We had paint leftover from another project and used an existing bench. Those galvanized storage bins were indestructible though and totally worth the extra cost! However, I want to work our way around this house replacing the baseboard since the previous owners had a cat or dog that destroyed the baseboard in some areas.

Patch any holes in the wall left by previous fixtures and the door frame. I especially love that you took off the door because it just never made sense that the closet door and the front door opened into each other. Did you make this DIY or a similar one? Great timing huh? In fact, a coat closet wasn't needed at all in Florida! Second, our coat closet door and our front door open right into each other, and kept causing traffic jams. So we turned the coat closet into a mini mudroom using the same method as the DIY closet mudroom in our second house.
