A trench knife is a combat knife designed to kill or incapacitate an enemy at close quarters, such as in a trench or other confined area. During the Second World War , the trench knife, by this time also called a combat knife , was developed into new designs. On the German side, the Nahkampfmesser and associated knives were widely issued to the ordinary soldier for combat and utility purposes, while Allied armies mostly issued trench knives to elite infantry units and soldiers not equipped with the bayonet. With the exception of the German Nahkampfmesser or close combat knife , [4] most early trench knives were fabricated by hand by individual soldiers or blacksmiths for the purpose of silently killing sentries and other soldiers during trench raids. One type of stabbing weapon, the French Nail , was made by cutting and pointing the steel stakes used to support the barbed wire protecting trenches. Some historians say that some trench knives models were inspired by the Bowie knife.

Higher muzzle velocity meant that a soldier could engage distant targets without having to make ballistic adjustments. It retained the straight bolt action of the Gras rifle of The French rifle was modified in and again five years later, but had one key fault. This was its eight-round tubular magazine derived from the Austrian Kropatschek rifle in which the bullet of one round butted up against the percussion cap of the cartridge case in front. It was slow to load and there was always the risk if the job was rushed that the bullet of one round would hit the percussion cap of the round in front and cause an explosion. The Lebel was replaced during the war by the Berthier; a more modern design that used the Berthier bolt action and the box magazine feed from the Mannlicher. The box was better than the tube magazine, but French soldiers were equipped with three-round clips in contrast to the five-round clips used by the British and Germans. The rifle was further modified in to take a five-round box magazine and the resulting weapon was widely used by a number of foreign armies in the inter-war periods. Officers were armed with a revolver and sword — both were soon discarded since they made the user an obvious target for snipers. The pistol carried by British officers was often the powerful British Webley.

Inside a trench, all that is visible is just a few feet on either side, ending at the trench walls in front and back, with a patch of leaden sky visible above. Trenches in WWI were constructed with sandbags, wooden planks, woven sticks, tangled barbed wire or even just stinking mud. Trenches became trash dumps of the detritus of war: broken ammunition boxes, empty cartridges, torn uniforms, shattered helmets, soiled bandages, shrapnel balls, bone fragments. Trenches were also places of despair, becoming long graves when they collapsed from the weight of the war. They were easy targets and casualties were enormously high. By the end of , after just five months of fighting, the number of dead and wounded exceeded four million men. The trench systems on the Western Front were roughly miles long, stretching from the English Channel to the Swiss Alps, although not in a continuous line.
