For almost a decade, Helou has immersed herself in the Sicilian way of life and added a rich new layer to her understanding of Mediterranean and Islamic food cultures. The first thing that drew me to Sicily was its resemblance to Lebanon and Syria. I made my decision to move here a decade ago after going to Sicily for the olive harvest. The harvest, the olive oil tasting, the way they eat: I decided there and then that I would buy a piece of land and build a house. The friend whose olive harvest I was at introduced me to someone who would show me four options in one day, one of which turned out to be my dream property. Eating out in Sicily feels very much like life before globalisation. Nothing seems to have changed that much. The presentation is always simple. The colours of the plates are often not that pretty, but the food is very tasty, at least in the places I choose to go to. Most of the time, the businesses are run by families, like in Osteria La Dolce Vita , my favourite restaurant in Trapani. The husband is in the front-of-house and runs the business, while the wife cooks in the kitchen. The husband has his own fishermen sources whom he buys directly from. The wife has two sisters who are also cooks, and one sister has another restaurant called Trattoria Del Corso near the place I rented while I was renovating my flat.
Ristorante Ci Vulia is also close to many hotels in Trapani.
OK, so maybe we hit a off night, but Ristorante Le Vele was pretty bad. We are not wine experts, so we just ordered a glass of the house white. It was literally so bad that we sent it back. I have never done that. They were gracious about it and replaced it with something a little better.
