Athenian Secessionists. Epirean Secessionists.
This page is your source for background information about each of the playable factions: their starting position on the campaign map, their civic and military focus, and some of their key battlefield units. Each faction has their own special attribute. The playable factions represent key powers within the Greco-Roman, Barbarian, and Eastern cultures, and each offers a notably different and deeper form of gameplay experience from those in previous Total War games. Each brings unique commercial, military and political strengths, its own agents and political system, and three tech trees representing civic, military and engineering disciplines. Each will have its own dilemmas to face and different styles of army to manage. Some factions are split into a number of playable families, which bring further unique benefits to their base faction traits.

I wonder why they toke out almost all playable factions in game i mean as i know so far inorder to play as more you have to buy the other dlc witch is bull i mean it's not right if you could play as almost all the factions in the first Rome total war then why in this one do i have to pay in order to play as other factions Start with Empire, the map of each game are not filled with rebels. The DLC are only a small percentage overall, but if you want to play the other factions, there are mods for them. You still need to buy the DLC to play with the mods, but you don't have to buy them to play the minors. They didn't take any out. Rome 1 has 11 playable factions. As Delacourt '27 says, much of Rome 1's map is covered by an amorphous blob of "rebels" whose only purpose was to be conquered by the playables and a handfull of named non-playables. Rome 2 in contrast has dozens and dozens of minor factions, all of which are not only potential invasion targets, but trade partners, allies, enemies, allies of your enemies, client states, satrapies etc. They act independently, and can even go out and conquer lands for themselves unlike Rome 1's rebels, who sat in their homes waiting to die. Also worth noting that playable factions in Rome 2 have a lot more going on than just a name and some shared units. Internal politics, civil wars, missions, victory conditions, chapter objectives, unique units, tech trees etc. Also worth noting that Rome 2 without any paid DLC has all the major powers of the era. I know some will argue Greece was a major power, but in the period the game is actually set Greece's glory days are long since past.

Rome II is one of those Total War games where factions truly feel unique, and the gameplay of each one makes you wonder how the others play. This means that Rome 2 players tend to be among the most invested in the Total War franchise. I might not be a Rome 2 expert, but I am one to play a campaign at least once a year with a different faction. And into the powerful Roman Empire. Are the Marcomanni the weakest starting civilization in the game? This faction is terrible. The Marcomanni have virtually no defenses at all, they have one of the worse economies in the game, and their starting armies are terrible. In fact, this is the one faction that you often target when you find it nearby. I really recommend this one to experienced players only. This is not the civilization to start your first playthrough with.

It marked the end of a contest for power in the Mediterranean - the establishment of Roman hegemony over the entire Italian peninsula and deep into Iberia.
