Over the past two years, the presenters have focused on tours after the Amazon Prime Video series put an end to the review segments. Their Top Gear reviews are specifically held in high regard by motoring enthusiasts, especially the ones on Reddit. It involves Hammond taking a look at two of his favorite childhood cars. The review finds Hammond in comedic form as he dishes out harsh truths on how car manufacturers usually rush to make new models that are no different from the previous ones. An interesting detail he notes is that the Ferrari F40 has a top speed of mph while the version of the same car hits mph. Why exactly the manufacturer would only add 1 mph is something that leaves both him and the viewers baffled. And since both cars are his favorites, Hammond demonstrates a level of bias, refusing to declare one of the two cars as better than the others.

Three male presenters, the usual stunts, the usual format: dull, dull, dull. I was right. The usual aerial shots gave us a feel for the majestic scenery and the rich local cultures of Ethiopia, and all that. The saving grace is that the old-school Top Gear borderline casual racism is gone. Harris, Flintoff and McGuiness even manage to make a thoughtful reference to the famine of without lapsing into accidental Partridgespeak. A relief. Even the attempts at gross vulgarity — which ordinarily I greatly enjoy — are just numbingly awful. In the extreme heat of the desert, the hottest place on earth, they were issued with some remarkably futile challenges, like driving backwards for a bit, or blindfolded across an airstrip. The unchallenging challenges told us precisely sod all about the cars, about the presenters, or about the ancient civilisation and vibrant nation they were surrounded by. They might as well have been in the New Forest. And that, I have to report, was the wittiest, most inventive line in the whole hour. Not here. The remaining time on the show is taken up with Chris Harris thrashing a new, very fast, horsepower Ferrari and a slightly less fast horsepower McLaren around a track. Anyway, when I come to trade up my Skoda Octavia Mark2 1.

I suppose if Top Gear were a car it would be powered by a frenetic three-cylinder engine. It would be supercharged and turbocharged, still with plenty of go, though misfiring at times. It would have a slightly weary superstructure, suffering from a little metal fatigue and the odd spot of corrosion. Nothing serious, you understand, but in need of attention. So the first of the latest series its 33rd is very much the typical formula, with all its strengths and weaknesses. Funnily enough, I reviewed the new Isuzu D-Max pick-up myself recently — a tidy enough drive for a diesel commercial vehicle — but never dreamt it could be raced and rallied with quite the aplomb it clearly is in the beautiful jungles of Indochina.

With Freddie Flintoff and Paddy McGuinness joining Chris Harris, the banter is barbed but good-natured, the gags less non-PC — and imagine Clarkson and co doing an episode on electric cars? R emind me: where had we got to with Top Gear? Ever since Jeremy Clarkson got sacked for punching that producer — amazingly, more than four years ago — the BBC has struggled to replace, or revive, or reboot the formula that made the show such a storming success. But you know what? Against all the odds, it works. It gives me no particular pleasure to suggest that some of the original magic of Top Gear has been rekindled by this unlikely trio, but, miraculously, it has.

Even as an import, Top Gear simply blew my mind away during my first viewing of the show last year when The Discovery Channel ran a season of the show slightly altered for the US Market. We then saw Gordon Ramsay and Jesse Eisenberg feature as stars in a rally-cross car. Sure, Top Gear will talk about how many newton meters of torque the Mercedes AMG CLS65 has and how that makes it the most powerful production car in the world, but how will they convey that? Few of us have had to do it in front of a global audience waiting for us to fail. The extremely childish behaviour of The Three Stooges in this episode was painful to watch and another few like this one and the viewing figures will drop off another cliff. This one definitely goes all the way to 11! You have to remember that this is no the reason why this show is still a highly rated show 8 years on is not just because of these 3 personalities. On one hand there is the SPEED Channel that is not available in every market, and on the other there is the "Powerblock" on Spike TV that offers little more than how to add a bit of power to your Grandmother's '81 Caprice. Just can't get into it anymore. When Clarkson was asked why is this show so great he gave FULL responsibility to the camera crews who do absolutely stunning wok and should set a benchmark for cameramen around the world , the producers who supposedly stay in work until 2am working and all the back-room staff that organise everything.

The tour in the Nomad is as exciting as it can get. One of the things that make the show so iconic is the tendency of the trio to find childish ways to have fun. That was the weakest part of the old show, and now they are trying to build on it? Top Gear is classic. Want to bookmark your favourite articles and stories to read or reference later? Then there's the "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" segment, where each week a guest celebrity will come on to do an interview and then race around the Top Gear test track in a budget priced sedan to see how they compare to other famous celebrities who have done the same.
