Twenty-six episodes were produced. The ninth series was filmed in September May around the time HiT Entertainment had put themselves for sale because of straining toy firms. Private equity investment group Apax Partners decided to purchase HiT to save them from any possible downfall. This is also notable as the first series for which Sharon Miller acted as story editor, replacing Paul Larson and Abi Grant ; Miller would continue to helm the show's writing until the sixteenth series. In an alleged attempt as recounted by Sam Barlow to maintain the "literary" qualities of the show, Miller began to incorporate elements of rhyming and alliteration into its narration and dialogue beginning with this series, which would become an increasingly-prominent trademark of the ensuing seven series.
