Gives formative teens an unhealthy view of sex and romance. Far too much emphasis on romance and includes long make out scenes, including girl straddling guy and removing her shirt on first date. Parents getting high and engaging in casual intimate relationships, including spontaneous car sex.

Like the book, the show is primarily concerned with romance, especially a love triangle between a teen girl and two brothers. Expect lots of talk of boyfriends and girlfriends, flirting, dating, and kissing…. Emotions and interpersonal relationships are explored honestly. Bonds between family and longtime friends are strong. A young woman is given the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them, without drastic consequences. Belly is a kind-hearted and loving character who has humble and realistic dreams: a first kiss, a happy summer, good times with her friends. Her mom, Laurel, is sometimes impatient with her but ultimately gives her space to become her own person. Conrad is complicated and tends to bottle up his angst. Overall, characters have realistic flaws and hurt one another by mistake, but their love for one another is clear. Laurel and her biracial Korean and White kids, Belly and Steven, all have leading roles. Otherwise, most characters are White, and race generally goes unmentioned, only coming up in rare instances like when Laurel says if she wrote about "the Asian American experience," her books would sell better.

This book is great and teaches a lot about different families. Parents that freak out OMG so and so did what????? There is a lot of sexual references that again was not in the books. The main character is sweet and there is one boy that is a good role model but the rest of the cast seem pretty lost and messed up - not a good ratio. This show makes underage drinking seem okay and cool, and the parents in the show don't really do anything about it or punishment, which I'm not a fan of. Our Editors Recommend. Positive Role Models Belly is a kind-hearted and loving character who h. Jumping around in time through a series of flashbacks keeps the story moving, and it's always easy to follow and understand when events are taking place. Boys going through puberty act like buffoons and then moms making gross comments about the female's physical development. There is a lot of sexual references that again was not in the books. Which the parents in the show seem to embrace all of it. Kid, 11 years old. A young woman is given the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them, without drastic consequences. Did we miss something on diversity? Our Review Parents say 33 Kids say Seeing people kiss and being kissed are described briefly a few times. Hello common sense media. They're strong, positive models of compassion and communication. I love rom com shows they are the best. Dads are remote and mostly absent. Most of this stuff is preference on what you would want to expose to your kids.
