CBS head of programming Fred Silverman saw them one evening and offered them their own show. The show was a top hit in the ratings for its entire run. Each episode opened with the show's theme song, which segued into the first few notes of " The Beat Goes On ". Every episode, Sonny exchanged banter with Cher, allowing Cher to put down Sonny in a sarcastic, yet comic manner. Comedy skits followed, mixed with musical numbers. At the end of each episode, Sonny and Cher sang their hit " I Got You Babe " to the audience, sometimes with their son Chaz Then known as Chastity, as he was assigned female at birth, but later transitioned male in tow.

The show's formula, which had already been established both onstage and on the small screen their '69 pilot episode is among the extra features , includes plenty of music duets, Cher's solo performances in typically outlandish Bob Mackie gowns, various guest shots ; lots of shtick consisting mostly of Cher's put-downs of the minimally talented but good-natured Sonny ; and sketches and skits ranging from lame to inspired, including a mock-opera based on "All in the Family" and starring Metropolitan Opera tenor Robert Merrill as a warbling Archie Bunker. By this time, however, the variety show genre was already in steep decline, and Sonny and Cher was one of the few successful programs of the genre remaining on the air. This is a very well done DVD. The interview with the producers is also good, although they come off as a little smug.
