Update: It's been almost five years since I read this short story as a freshman in high school and recently I read Zodiac by Robert Graysmith. Since becoming familiar with the killings the Zodiac executed, as well as the possible ones he may have committed, I wanted to reread this short story. Zodiac pretty much copies all of Zaroff's obsession with hunting humans.

I was surprised by the gore One victim was shown being pulled under water by a shark and then it showed an underwater view of the shark surrounded by a dark cloud in the water.
After falling overboard from a yacht, Sanger Rainsford swims to a nearby island. There General Zaroff, a big-game hunter who knows of Rainsford from published accounts of his hunting snow leopards in Tibet, invites him to dinner. Zaroff is bored of hunting because it no longer challenges him; he has moved to Ship-Trap Island in order to capture shipwrecked sailors. I've always enjoyed the film version of The Most Dangerous Game, but this is the first time I've read the short story that it was based on. I suppose the first three shots I heard was when the hunter flushed his quarry and wounded it. It was an empty cartridge. General Zaroff did not appear until luncheon. At the great table the general was sitting, alone. Log in Sign up Sparknotes. He looks resourceful—— Well, good-night, Mr. Luckily, you and I are hunters. I shall not follow till dusk.
On a yacht in the Caribbean, Sanger Rainsford is a hunter famed for his skills, preparing for a hunting trip up the Amazon in South America with his friend Whitney, who tells him about some strange superstitions involving a nearby island.
I made a good skimming-practice out of it, though. Rainsford," said the general. For a moment he stood there, thinking. If he does not wish to hunt, I turn him over to Ivan. Zaroff always told Rainsford to omit the name murderer, when Rainsford told him of what he thought of the inhumane behaviour. A certain coolheadedness had come to him; it was not the first time he had been in a tight place. But perhaps the general was a devil The island is perfect for my purposes—there are jungles with a maze of trails in them, hills, swamps——". His whole idea at first was to put distance between himself and General Zaroff; and, to this end, he had plunged along, spurred on by the sharp rowers of something very like panic. A very inferior lot, I regret to say. You almost feel like you're on the boat with them. The general chuckled. So I bought this island, built this house, and here I do my hunting. No thrill left in tigers, no real danger. General Zaroff's face suddenly brightened.
