On the road however, the three manage to overpower and kill one of their captors, although the other man is able to flee with Aelfwynn. Edward and Uhtred speak privately, where Edward wonders if this will be the battlefield where they die. He reveals his intention to Father Benedict to be reunited with his grandfather Aethelhelm, and demands the priest accompany him.
