A team led by Andrew Sutherland of MIT and Andrew Booker of Bristol University has solved the final piece of a famous year old math puzzle with an answer for the most elusive number of all: All were eventually solved, or proved unsolvable, using various techniques and supercomputers, except for two numbers: 33 and Booker says he received many offers of help to find the answer, but instead he turned to his friend Andrew "Drew" Sutherland , a principal research scientist in the Department of Mathematics.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a comic science fiction series created by Douglas Adams that has become popular among fans of the genre and members of the scientific community. Phrases from it are widely recognised and often used in reference to, but outside the context of, the source material. Many writers on popular science , such as Fred Alan Wolf , Paul Davies , and Michio Kaku , have used quotations in their books to illustrate facts about cosmology or philosophy. In the radio series and the first novel, a group of hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional beings demand to learn the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything from the supercomputer Deep Thought , specially built for this purpose. Deep Thought points out that the answer seems meaningless because the beings who instructed it never knew what the question was. When asked to produce the Ultimate Question, Deep Thought says that it cannot; however, it can help to design an even more powerful computer that can. This new computer will incorporate living beings into the " computational matrix " and will run for ten million years. The computer is revealed as being the planet Earth , with its pan-dimensional creators assuming the form of white lab mice to observe its running. The process is hindered after eight million years by the unexpected arrival on Earth of the Golgafrinchans , and is then ruined completely, five minutes prior to completion, when the Earth is destroyed by the Vogons to supposedly make way for a new hyperspace bypass. In The Restaurant at the End of the Universe , this reason is revealed to have been a ruse: the Vogons had been hired to destroy the Earth by a consortium of psychiatrists , led by Gag Halfrunt , who feared for the loss of their careers when the Ultimate Question became known. Lacking a real question, the mice pan-dimensional beings decide not to go through the whole process again and instead settle for the out-of-thin-air suggestion "How many roads must a man walk down?
In a preprint paper, Sander Huisman, now at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, pressed on and found a solution for 74 :. Additionally, "Harmless" and "Mostly Harmless" both feature as ranks in the computer game Elite and its sequels.
When Douglas Adams wrote The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, he added a central joke which has become more famous over the years than the novel itself: "The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything is Now, in an attempt to cash in on their obsession, a new book published this week, Douglas Adams' Amazingly Accurate Answer to Life, the Universe and Everything, looks at real-life occurrences of the number The book is timed to coincide with the 10th anniversary of Adams's death this spring. Scores of adolescents have posited theories about significance of the number. The actor Stephen Fry claimed to know the true answer, but won't tell, saying he'll take it to his grave. The author himself rather undermined the myriad analyses when he dismissed them all with the simple answer that the choice of the number was a joke. It had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy [a] [b] is a comedy science fiction franchise created by Douglas Adams. Originally a radio comedy broadcast on BBC Radio 4 , it was later adapted to other formats, including novels, stage shows, comic books, a TV series , a text adventure game , and feature film. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is an international multimedia phenomenon; the novels are the most widely distributed, having been translated into more than 30 languages by In , BBC Radio 4 announced a 40th-anniversary celebration with Dirk Maggs , one of the original producers, in charge. The broad narrative of Hitchhiker follows the misadventures of the last surviving man, Arthur Dent , following the demolition of the Earth by a Vogon constructor fleet to make way for a hyperspace bypass. Dent is rescued from Earth's destruction by Ford Prefect —a human-like alien writer for the eccentric, electronic travel guide The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy —by hitchhiking onto a passing Vogon spacecraft. Following his rescue, Dent explores the galaxy with Prefect and encounters Trillian , another human who had been taken from Earth before its destruction by the self-centred President of the Galaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox and the depressed Marvin the Paranoid Android.

In an episode of The Simpsons, police chief Wiggum wakes up to a question aimed at him and replies "42". So I thought that just for a change I would actually construct a puzzle and see how many people solved it. At the end of the radio series, the television series and the novel The Restaurant at the End of the Universe , Arthur Dent , having escaped the Earth's destruction, potentially has some of the computational matrix in his brain. The author himself rather undermined the myriad analyses when he dismissed them all with the simple answer that the choice of the number was a joke. Sandi Miller Department of Mathematics. To find the correct statement of the query whose answer is 42, the computer will have to build a new version of itself. More MIT News. Catalan numbers were first mentioned, under another name, by Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler, who wanted to know how many different ways an n -sided convex polygon could be cut into triangles by connecting vertices with line segments. That calculation is not the only other solution. Mathematically Unique? When we do so, we see that:. In base 2, the n th element may be specified by repeating 10 n times Among the design flaws is the choir of robots that perform this song: they sing a tritone out of tune with the accompaniment. The puzzle is an illustration consisting of 42 multi-coloured balls, in 7 columns and 6 rows.
One of the drawings found in an atomic fallout shelter on Jikthroom Beta , as seen in the opening of Episode 5 of the TV series. This Answer was first calculated by the supercomputer Deep Thought after seven and a half million years of thought. This shocking answer resulted in the construction of an even larger supercomputer, named Earth , which was tasked with determining what the question was in the first place.
Instead, it invariably produces a concoction which most people found unpleasant that is "almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea". Iceland: CCP Games. It was discovered in by mathematician A. The new version of the computer is Earth. The program on the "Earth computer" should have run correctly, but the unexpected arrival of the Golgafrinchans on prehistoric Earth caused input errors into the system—computing the wrong question because of the garbage in, garbage out rule. In other words, no algorithm, however clever, may be able to process all possible cases. Phone: In the book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy -The Radio Scripts , his friends describe how he would always "mislay" his towel. Here are some of them:. Read our privacy notice. No simple known formula provides the n th element of this sequence. Still, a recent news item caught their attention. The answer came in a preprint , the result of a huge computational effort coordinated by Booker and Andrew Sutherland of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
