The Bends is the second studio album by the English rock band Radioheadreleased on 13 March by Parlophone. The Bends combines guitar songs and ballads, with more restrained arrangements and cryptic lyrics than Radiohead's debut album, Pablo Honey Tensions were high, with pressure from Parlophone to match sales of Radiohead's debut single, " Creep ", the bends dummy, and progress was slow.

Radiohead were once just a band trying to figure things out for themselves … and The Bends is where that process truly began. The Bends was the album that forced critics and listeners alike to take them seriously — in a sense, it was the beginning of Radiohead as we know them today. However, as inevitable as it may seem in retrospect, it was anything but at the time. Thom Yorke and Donwood met at the University of Exeter, both of them studying art and literature. After recording the footage, they played it on a television and photographed the screen, creating the grainy, shimmering variations in color you see on the cover. The Bends shows us a group of young artists who are very much still figuring it out, jaded early on by unexpected fame, throwing ideas against the wall to see what works. We see this process of creation-as-discovery in the story behind the album artwork as well as in the record itself. This need to experiment stemmed just as much from youth and inexperience as it did from desperation. Before they had a chance to discover who they were for themselves, countless listeners had already put them in a box: they were derivative, they were a one-hit wonder, defined by a single song at the start of their career. Though many have come to admire Radiohead for their consistency, in the lead-up to The Bends , it was becoming increasingly unclear whether the band had a future at all.

While the band's debut efforts, the EP Drill and album Pablo Honey , were decently regarded by critics, they were both met with a general shrug by the masses, who considered its grungy sound derivative of Nirvana at a time when damn near everyone was imitating the reluctant Seattle superstars. Most listeners didn't consider the tracklists of either release particularly memorable save for "Creep", the band's first hit , and indeed this consensus would become more widely adopted with time. This album, meanwhile, saw a change in direction for the band, its blend of Britpop and Post-Grunge a backdrop for more layered sounds and more fleshed-out, cryptic, and emotionally candid lyrics that set the stage for the band's increasingly abstract and experimental follow-up material. The Bends saw considerable commercial success, peaking at No. This success would end up paving the way for the even greater heights achieved by OK Computer just two years later.
