There are four potions that stand out as amazing when you're mining. This tutorial will tell you where to find the ingredients to craft them, and introduce you to other guides that can help a budding alchemist get started: see my guides to How to Make Potions , along with my guide to gardens in Terraria to learn to get the plants and brew them into potions. By making a garden area, you can have an infinite supply of potions. If you already know all that and just need a list of ingredients, this will help. There is a materials checklist to make a stack of ten of each of these potions at the bottom. In the screenshot above, my character is quite deep - near the bottom of the Cavern layer. Use these potions when you're at least in the Underground so they are not a waste. You'll find more ore the deeper you go, although the challenge increases as well. The Spelunker Potion is the best of the four here, so it should naturally be listed first. Spelunker Potions reveal everything around - treasures, ore, heart crystals, and treasure chests.

One of the key aspects of preparing to go to Hard Mode is the defeat of the Wall of Flesh. However, there is an important thing that should be done beforehand that is required to move forward in Hard Mode after its defeat: the collection of Hellstone to allow for the crafting of a Molten Pickaxe. Moreover, the Defense boost from Molten Armor is worth it regardless of your playstyle and will protect you until you can make a better set. Hellstone mining requires the pickaxe you get from killing Brain of Cthulhu or Eater of Worlds and using those materials - Nightmare or Deathbringer, but you're not ready for this adventure until you've done that anyway so it's a non-issue for most players. There is but one problem - Hellstone is hot. It gushes lava when extracted, and merely touching the unmined stone will cause damage to your character. Both of these require you to do some extra work in obtaining Obsidian. You're going to need it anyway. Obsidian does not often exist naturally in-game. You must produce it by making water meet with lava.
