Even a decade after its release, Terraria remains one of the most popular sandbox games available on Steam , with over , players reported to still play it daily. It still gets frequent content updates that add bonus content to the game, like new vanity items and game modes that keep the gameplay fresh and exciting. The beauty of non-linear games like Terraria is that players can take the gameplay at their own pace, with several game modes on offer to vary the gameplay. Terraria's Journey game mode, added in the Journey's End update, gives players creative free rein over their domain, as they can tailor the difficulty to their liking. The Journey mode in Terraria could be likened to the legendary "Creative" setting in Minecraft , both allow the player to acquire items easier than in normal gameplay. Terraria 's Journey mode is slightly different, giving the player individual customization options through the Power Menu to optimize their gameplay to suit them.

Journey Mode can be selected upon creation of new characters and worlds. It allows the player a wide array of customization options during gameplay, including duplication of items, modification of time and weather, and difficulty sliders. Journey mode is only accessible with Journey characters in Journey worlds Journey worlds can only be accessed using Journey characters, and Journey characters can only play in Journey worlds. Journey Mode is intended to be Terraria's "creative" or "tourist" mode, making it relatively easy to acquire items and explore Terraria's various elements and mechanics without having to overcome its normal progression of challenges; though Journey players do have the ability to adjust the game's difficulty on-the-fly to challenge themselves and test different difficulty levels. The Power Menu can be accessed via the toggle button located under the main inventory slots, above the crafting menu. Its interface replaces the crafting menu when opened. This menu allows the player to instantly duplicate any previously researched item indefinitely. Clicking a category tab shows only items of that type; clicking the same category tab again deselects it. The search bar lets players search for specific items. When searching for an item, if a category tab is open, it will only search through items in that category. The search bar also has a button at the end of it to clear any text inside it.

The Terraria: Journey's End update will bring a hefty amount of new content and features to the nearly decade-old sandbox game, including items, enemies, mini-biomes, and two new difficulty levels: Master Mode and Journey Mode. Master Mode seems obvious enough—it's going to be tough—and we've speculated previously that Journey Mode might be a creative mode of some sort. Today developer Re-Logic finally revealed what it's all about, saying that it's not a creative mode, but "a whole new way to experience Terraria" that enables significantly increased levels of freedom in, and control over, the game: "The ultimate evolution of being able to play your Terraria, any way you want. All due respect to Re-Logic, but it is sort of a creative mode. For one thing, Journey mode characters can only be used in Journey Mode worlds, and conversely, characters from the other modes are not allowed to venture into Journey Mode—no exceptions.
