I had originally planned to use the phone wires to pull the cat5e cable, but it appears the phone lines are stapled to studs somewhere. From questions like this one , I know I can use the cable to get M at best because there are only 3 pairs, and gigabit requires 4 pairs. However, I am fortunate enough to have two phone lines that run parallel that I can use. This gives me a total of 6 pairs.

A few years ago while I was moving into a new house and planning how I would set up my new network I discovered that the existing phone lines in the home were installed in such a way that I was able to repurpose many of the cables and use them to set up a full gigabit Ethernet network in much of the new house without pulling any new cable at all. Since that project I have been able to save a lot of time and money on several projects simply by converting phone lines to Ethernet. It is not uncommon to be able to convert phone lines to Ethernet, but before you get started you need to make sure that the phone lines were originally put in using the right kind of cable and topology or network design to be able to be used for Ethernet. Once you are sure the original network was set up in a way suitable for conversion it is simply a process of re terminating all of the cables with the proper connectors and verifying that everything is set up correctly. In this article I will go through how to tell if your phone network is a good candidate for conversion and how to go about setting everything up. Before we can decide if the phone lines in your house were installed using cable that is good enough to be used in an Ethernet network we need to figure out exactly what kind of cable is installed in your walls. Much of the time the category or type of cable is printed right on the outside of the cable, but if you do not see the category number or if you are in a situation where you cannot even see much of the outside of the cable at all we can still look at the back of a phone jack and get a good idea of whether it will work or not. The first thing to look at is the number of wires in the cable and whether they are twisted together in pairs or not. If the wires inside your cable are not twisted into pairs you can not use that cable for any kind of Ethernet at all.

Can I convert phone wiring in walls to act as only Ethernet network because the phone wiring is not in use and not connected to the phone company so there is no voltage in the wires. Here is what I am thinking. Get Ethernet cable cut it in half and attach wires from wall to the first computer and the same with the other computer. If this is possible do I just attach wires in the same color and ignore brown wire or do I have to rearrange wires , and what will the speed will be. There are ways to use Cat3 phone cables at higher speeds, as listed below. They do not run Ethernet over the cable but protocols more adapted to the phone cable medium, but all provide Ethernet at the connector sockets used to access these connections. So for practical purposes, it does not matter that it's not Ethernet. So, exactly made for the purpose at hand.
