I had to clean, re-lube and replace the tone arm viscous damping fluid. Once I fired it up I discovered the cantilever suspension was dried up and stiffened up on the Shure VIV cartridge. It sounded horrible. This was a solid performer with a superior motor and tonearm to what is found on a entry Rega or Pro-Ject. It's resonance dampening is better than what one would find on a Pro-ject T-1 and it's arm employs many of the characteristics of the SME Unlike so many turntables offered today this will track a severely warped record, something that can not be achieved with short arms like the Pro-Ject 8. Keep in mind, these were designed when turntables were king and not considered a decor statement piece as turntable decks are today. To that end, they are more at home playing any sort of record in any condition opposed to the modern stuff. The SL is at home with the expert or novice alike. The most reliable of any of the consumer Technics they are plentiful. They are best suited to Shure or Ortofon. A must buy! This will not disappoint!

The Technics SL turntable was introduced by Technics in It is a direct drive, fully automatic model with enough basic features to satisfy the budget turntable buyer. Quite a few were sold and they are fairly easy to find today. The lower price point allowed budget oriented consumers to experience the ease of using a fully automatic direct drive turntable. Never before at this price has there been available a direct-drive turntable with these features. Fully automatic operation offers you tremendous convenience, and at the same time reduces possibilities of damaging your valuable cartridge. All in all an impressive package at a remarkably low price. The SL uses a direct-drive system that is different from conventional systems. Instead, it has only one moving part, which helps eliminate these issues and ensures a very smooth and constant rotation of the platter.
