Sylvania is divided because, by definition, a wilderness may not be crossed by a road. Visitors to the Recreation Area will find a variety of facilities, including a beautiful day use building, picnic areas, a beach, boat launches, and the Clark Lake Campground with 48 auto accessible sites. Across the road, the Wilderness offers 34 named lakes some with beautiful sandy beaches and more than 25 miles of hiking trails. You may want to stay for more than a day to explore some of the distant parts of the Wilderness. Fifty rustic campsites are located at 8 lakes see map of Sylvania for locations which offer great solitude, but only fire grates and wilderness latrines are provided. Finding the camp sites and portages can be a challenge since the lakes have many inlets and there are few signs or markers.

The largest of these buildings, the Thompson lodge, featured 16 bedrooms, 13 fireplaces, an indoor tennis court, and European antique furniture. It was constructed from logs brought by rail and, for the last 7 miles, hauled by a team of horses.

This 18,acre federally designated wilderness area and adjacent recreation area is famous for its numerous pristine lakes and old growth forest. The Sylvania Wilderness is a great place to hike, canoe, kayak, fish, photograph the outdoors and observe nature. Numerous smaller lakes, ponds, and bogs lie scattered among the rolling hills. Some of the lakes have beautiful wash-in sand beaches perfect for picnic lunches, swimming, and relaxing in the sand. Paddlers can see far below the surface while gliding across the exceptionally clear water. The larger lakes are connected by portage trails, allowing for many days of exploration. One can see virgin northern hemlock-hardwood forest and towering red and white pines standing like sentinels along the shorelines. A visitor to Sylvania experiences the forests and lakes of the Northwoods as they were prior to European settlement. Approximately 26 miles of hiking trails wind through the forests and shorelines. Sylvania is home to a variety of wildlife.

Surrounding almost the entire lake is the Sylvania Wilderness and Recreation Area. Much of our appeal comes from our close proximity to Sylvania which is just a few minutes walk, bike or paddle away.
