Historically a working-class suburb containing a mixture of industrial and commercial land uses, since the s the area has been one of Australia's most celebrated urban redevelopment projects. It remains a predominantly low-rise, urban village neighbourhood centred around Subiaco train station and Rokeby Road. The suburb has three schools: Subiaco Primary School, Perth Modern School , which is the state's only fully academically selective public school, and Bob Hawke College. Subiaco is located approximately 3 km 1. Subiaco is 6 km 3. To the north is Wembley and West Leederville. To the east is West Perth and Kings Park. To the south is Shenton Park. To the west is Daglish and Jolimont, Western Australia. Subiaco lies on Spearwood Dunes, which formed around 40, years ago. The dunes consist of brown sand lying over yellow subsoil, with Tamala Limestone below. These dunes are part of the greater Swan Coastal Plain. Prior to European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Mooro group of the Whadjuk Noongar people.

Since coming to Perth I have lived in a few suburbs over the years - the majority North of the River and none thus far compare to Subiaco. It's vibrant, tight knit, safe and overall a great suburb to live in. Subi was once a great suburb, but it has since changed into a dull lifeless place. Yet it is still very expensive. Subiaco is one of the reasons Perth is such a great city. It's vibrant but not overwhelming, has beautiful parks and gardens Lake Juilbup , some of the best dining and night life in Perth. Only a few minutes by train to the city, ten minutes drive to the beach or river. Subiaco pays the price for popularity, with parking in and around Rokeby Rd difficult and traffic heavy at peak times and if the footy is on at Subi Oval.
