Starrett City Boxing, founded in by legendary trainer Jimmy O'Pharrow, has been a pillar in the Brooklyn community for nearly 50 years, providing a safe haven for youth from all backgrounds.

It is located on a peninsula on the north shore of Jamaica Bay , bounded by Fresh Creek to the west and Hendrix Creek to the east. Starrett City contains both residential and commercial buildings. The residential portion of the property contains eight "sections" in a towers in the park layout. The complex also contains a community and recreation center, as well as two schools. Nestled in the East NY section of Brooklyn, Starrett City Boxing has served the needs of it's members from all neighborhoods and ethnic backgrounds for almost fifty 50 years and we have been invited by the Brooklyn Borough President's office to present boxing exhibitions-bouts in Prospect Park as part of the "Back to Brooklyn" celebration. Our mission is to rescue young men and women from the atmosphere of hopelessness that seems to pervade areas of high crime and high unemployment by contributing to the bolstering of self-esteem and building individual confidence and character through systemic training in the value of discipline and the acquisition of skills in areas that are relevant to a variety of sport activities. The achievements of our members include, but are not limited to, progress in learning and adapting to rules and regulations, an acquired willingness to assist and support each other and to assume responsibility for their own actions as well as for other human beings. It is hoped that these traits will be protected into their school environment and to the community at large. In addition, each member is assisted with and encouraged to improve their physical dexterity and coordination.
