Professional wrestling is one of the best examples of entertainment genres that mixes athleticism and show business. There's a reason why the wrestling industry has thrived for many decades and has a massive fanbase on a global stage. Although professional wrestling is not like any other traditional sport, there are some elements that professional wrestling takes from it. One of the elements is the title of the professional wrestling ring, "the squared circle," the same moniker commonly used for boxing rings. Professional wrestling is an entertainment genre that utilizes a sports presentation of its production. For instance, WWE has always maintained a sports-based product to an extent.

So while it is important to have a theoretical framework for your worldview, it is equally important to have a real-world framework in which you can apply the concepts and theories espoused in textbooks and academic works -- a sort of lived sociology, so to speak. I think this is a book every Pro wrestling fan should read, from the casual fan to the super fan. Regardless, the whole point of writing this type of book is to get it right, so if Shoemaker just wasn't sure, he probably should have just omitted the chapter.

As for professional wrestling, although it's entertainment rather than a competitive sport like boxing, it doesn't change the fact that the rings used in professional wrestling are also known as "the square circle" because of the similarities to the rings used in boxing. Shoemaker definitely has an intelligent approach to the material. I post there from time to time, but it's mostly everything wrong with the IWC in a nutshell.
