Basically homeschooling is not allowed in Germany, they are really strict about it. The romeikes taught their kids at home because of religious reasons and eventually the police came around, they had to pay fees, the authorities were about to take the kids to school, etc. They applied for asylum because they feel persecuted for being Christians and wanting to teach their kids at home. For me it strikes a a very weird complex of being the victim. It has nothing to do with asylum and is really gross considering who really needs asylum. I am really curious what will happen to them. And now it gets even more exciting as they get involved with my other weird interest apart from illegal acting homeschooling families in Germany : Fundies in the US. Omg thank you for the local perspective!! Either way, totally agree that asylum should only be used in emergencies, for people who are ACTUALLY in immediate danger, not some knuckleheads who are just mad that their kids have to learn unsupervised history. Since Germany and the Netherlands are both in the EU they could have come living in the Netherlands without asking for asylum.
